We recently connected with Kyasia Fields and have shared our conversation below.
Kyasia, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem by staying true to myself. I separated myself from others’ opinions and focused on loving myself. I became my only competition.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a multi-faceted artist within the realms of Horror. A special effects and beauty makeup artist, author, podcaster, and digital artist. My love for Horror started at a young age but was suppressed by my religious upbringing. Once I got to college and had more time to myself I was able to be more expressive with that outwardly. I started doing makeup at the age of 17 because I was a dancer at the time and needed to know how to apply it to my performances. I would go on YouTube and look at drag queen makeup tutorials (this was around the time when highlighting and contouring were all the rave) and I mimicked what I saw. I started off doing makeup in high school for Chic Fil A sandwiches and then took my talents to MAC Cosmetics and the rest was history, In college, people started to ask me to do more challenging looks like Skeletons, and Day of the Dead sugar skills and I would never really decline a challenge. I began posting my more creative makeup looks on social media and received great feedback. I began focusing more on learning the specific craft of special effects makeup artistry, I took those talents from college and began working at haunted houses, private events, art shows, and now actively working in film. I founded Kyfx Horror Group in 2018 which is the multimedia mother company to Kyfx Studios, a SFX studio I founded in 2020.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities that were the most impactful on my journey were to remain a student, I’m always growing, and learning, and most importantly I am very teachable. I crave knowledge in my craft. I want to know everything about everything. Never stop being a student of your craft. Rest, navigating in such a hustle “go-go” society like the one we live in can be exhausting for a true artist, one who takes time and dedication to create something from conception. Always factor in the need to rest and how that is very productive for you and your creative spirit.
Research, always do your research, no matter what you do. Research has propelled me so far in my journey, study, ask questions, READ.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
The main challenge I am facing now is navigating through imposter syndrome and truly understands the nature of my talents and gifts. With so much instant gratification around us , it’s hard to truly believe that we are who we are sometimes and that has been the biggest thing for me lately.
