We were lucky to catch up with Kyulee Choi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyulee, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I have always been a yes man when it comes to new opportunities. When someone asks me if I am willing to do a job that I do not have experiences in it, then I would always say yes. It is because I know I cannot grow without getting out of my comfort zone and taking risks. I also consider it as an exploring my new abilities.
One day, one of my friends asked me if I could write music for a documentary, I said yes to it right away. As a result, I found my new passion for the media music, so I ended up moving to U.S to study screen scoring. It was such a life-changing opportunity.
Also, another friend of mine asked me if I could edit audio and background music for marketing videos, I also said yes. And that opened my new path to be an audio engineer for TV shows and Movies.
Of course, I was very afraid at first and doubted myself, so only thing I could do was studying and trying harder to complete those jobs successfully. Those challenges always helped me grow as a creative and person. Also, it led me to more opportunities again!
Every time I completed the jobs successfully, my confidence and self-esteem more and more developed!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am originally from Seoul, South Kora and now I am working in the media industry based in LA. I have been orchestrating music, editing and recording dialogue, and singing for TV shows, movies, and video games. I have involved in many aspects as a creative and musician in the industry. I also produce my won music as well.
To explain about me a little bit more, I always loved playing instruments and singing since I can remember and I started my musical career as a singer-songwriter when I was 19 in Seoul. Afterward, I found my passion for the media music and moved to U.S. to study screen scoring at Berklee College of Music.
I wanted to work in the media industry because I’ve always been a big fan of TV shows and movies and I wanted to be a part of that. However, I learned there is a lot more amazing things about it. People watch TV and movies to be entertained. However, it is not only about entertainments, it also encourages emotional release, let people learn new perspectives and ideas, and stretch our understanding of the world. I often imagine what the viewers could take from a show or a movie that I work on. Being a part of something that can affect people in many positive ways could not be more proud and satisfying!
Plus, I can get to watch a lot of shows and movies before it comes out!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my opinion, one of the most important qualification and skill to have while working in the media industry is an ability to handle a stressful situation. It is because we often face continuous and tight deadlines that require long hours and heavy workload. When it was very busy season, I had to work 12 hours a day for months and also during weekends. A key to handle a stressful situation like this is staying positive. It helps us not to be burnt out and increases our productivity.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
As I mentioned earlier, I have been a yes man, but sometimes that made myself overwhelmed a little. Even though I always open to new opportunities and I am willing to help out others, but I realized it could take my time away from things that I need to get done. So, I have been trying to set boundaries on what my priorities and what I can wait.
