Meet La La Musiq

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful La La Musiq a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

La La, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I knew at a very young age that I loved to sing and write songs. However, I was very shy when it came to singing in the public. My mother didn’t even know that I could sing as I always did it when no one was around. As I got older, I began focusing more on music and songwriting but still didn’t have the courage to sing publicly. One year, my family and I were on vacation at Disney World and my husband signed me up for the American Idol experience. I was absolutely petrified but still went through with performing in front of over 500 people. At that very moment, I realized that I was meant to be a performer and share my talent with the world. I was able to overcome the fear of singing publicly and moved forward with my music career. Now, as a national award-winning recording artist I am fulfilling my purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an independent national recording artist and songwriter born in Shelby, Mississippi and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 2019, I started my professional music career in Dallas, Texas when I released my first gospel album titled ‘Set Apart’. It was recognized by The International Singer Songwriters Association which included winning the 2020 ISSA Female Emerging Artist of The Year Award!

In August 2021, I released my sophomore album ‘The Awakening’ and it was also recognized by The International Singer Songwriters Association which included winning the 2022 ISSA Female Emerging Artist of The Year Award. I am also really proud of my collaboration with recording artist Zemira Israel. Our song ‘Sistar’ was an official 2022 Grammy®︎ balloted single that was in nomination consideration for Song of The Year and Record of The Year.

Additional awards that I have won includes, the 2021 Sounds of DFW Bop Song of The Year Award for her single ‘Warrior’; the 2022 World Music Awards Inspirational Song of The Year for her single ‘Warrior’; the 2022 Indie Songwriters Awards for Best Duo for her single ‘Sistar’ with Zemira Israel; 2023 Akademia Music Award for Best Christian/Gospel Song for my single ‘He’s My Rock’; and selected to be November Artist of The Month for the 2023 Indie Gospel Calendar by Paul Puckett publications.

Some exciting things I have up and coming are my nominations with several professional music organizations. I am a 7x Voices of Gospel Music Awards nominee, a 5x Gospel Choice Music Awards nominee, and a 5x International Singer-Songwriters Association nominee for 2023. I also just finished my first short film with Purpose Driven Films that will be released this year called “The Family Business”. On April 24, 2023, I will be releasing my latest single called ‘Dim My Light’ on all digital platforms. I am also very excited to announce my La La Land tour which officially kicked off in February of this year! I will be performing in various cities throughout the country.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the three qualities that were most impactful for me on my journey were perseverance, building relationships, and the business acumen of the music industry. As an independent artist, you will have highs and lows in your career but it’s what you learn from each experience that makes you stronger. Being able to network can also help further your career as you make new partnerships to achieve your goals. Learning the music industry is important as you will need to understand not just the creative side but how to market, budget, and develop business plans etc. You have to be willing to take the time to learn in order to ensure your business knowledge is at the same level as your artistry.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to encourage me to be my best and to aim high with my goals. They supported me in all aspects of my life from educational successes to my music career. Having my family as an anchor gave me the confidence to know that I can do anything I put my mind too and I literally did it! I am so thankful to have such amazing parents and I am instilling the same encouragement into my children. We are the only ones that can limit ourselves and I choose to fly high!
