Meet La’Ketta Caldwell

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful La’Ketta Caldwell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

La’Ketta, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
From the tender age of three, my journey into the world of purpose began with delicate dance steps in a ballet studio, an initiation orchestrated by my mother. The arts, in all its forms, became my sanctuary, a canvas where my young heart could weave tales and emotions.

As a child, my grandmother’s stories wove the fabric of resilience, recounting the days of walking to school and toiling on the farm. These narratives etched the power of storytelling on my soul. It was during my teenage years that the magic of poetry unfolded before me. The verses of luminaries like Dr. Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni resonated with my spirit, guiding me to articulate the nuances of my own life.
The turning point manifested during my time at Southern Illinois University. In a Performance Arts class, I witnessed a metamorphosis, a poignant transformation of a fellow student from victim to survivor, all within the framework of a class assignment. This moment was a revelation, an epiphany that echoed in the corridors of my soul.

In that transformative moment, a seed was planted—a profound desire to produce art that serves a higher purpose. I yearned to create works that could be a guiding light for others, a source of inspiration, a companion on their healing journey. The goal crystallized: I wanted my art to help individuals find their voices amidst the cacophony of life, to serve as a beacon of hope and empowerment.
Fortune favored me, and I embarked on a career that allowed me to embed my artistic gift into the very fabric of my professional life. Each project became a canvas, each performance a testament to the healing power of art. Through the years, my purpose evolved, shaped by every soul touched and every story shared.

Today, I stand at the intersection of passion and purpose, a journey that started with ballet, meandered through the rhythmic verses of poetry, and found its true calling in the transformative power of the performing arts. My mission is clear—to be a conduit of healing, inspiration, and empowerment through the art that flows from the depths of my being.

As I continue this journey, I am reminded that purpose is not a destination but a lifelong odyssey—a dance with the heartbeats of the universe, an ever-evolving masterpiece painted with the hues of experience and shared humanity.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Professionally, my path has woven through the realm of education and the arts, reflecting a commitment to both personal and collective transformation. Currently, I serve as part of the dedicated team at LUMIN Schools, contributing to the nurturing of young minds and fostering an environment where education becomes a transformative journey.

In tandem with my work in education, I’ve co-founded a nonprofit venture, “Raising the Bar,” alongside my esteemed business partner, Robert Jackson. For the past five years, Raising the Bar has been a beacon of change, aiming to elevate individuals and communities through various initiatives. This includes dynamic collaborations with the Bronzeville Arts Ensemble and my own company, Keytalife.

A significant milestone in our journey is the upcoming production of a play based on my book, “Khloe’s Beautiful Blues,” in February 2024 at the esteemed King Center. This endeavor is not just about bringing a story to life on stage but about creating an immersive experience that resonates with the audience. As an extension of this, we will also be releasing an animation short for the book in 2024, expanding the reach and impact of the narrative.

On the for-profit side, my company Keytalife has become a multifaceted platform. We curate and host events that go beyond mere entertainment—they are experiences that provoke thought, stir emotions, and leave a lasting imprint. Keytalife also takes pride in producing impactful productions and commissioned poetry that aligns with the missions and visions of various companies.

One of the unique aspects of my work is the fusion of creativity and purpose. Throughout the year, I am honored to be invited to write original poems, share insights on panels, and deliver keynote addresses. Each opportunity is a chance to lend my voice to stories that need to be heard, to advocate for positive change, and to inspire others on their own journeys.
Under the Keytalife umbrella, I’ve expanded into event planning and training, recognizing the power of these elements in shaping meaningful experiences and fostering growth. This holistic approach allows me to not only create art but also to be a catalyst for transformation in diverse spheres.

Looking forward, the future holds exciting possibilities. The collaboration with the Bronzeville Arts Ensemble, the production of “Khloe’s Beautiful Blues,” and the animation release are just glimpses of what lies ahead. My commitment to education, the arts, and community upliftment remains unwavering, and I am eager to continue using my voice and creativity to make a positive impact.

As I stand at this juncture, I am not just an artist or an educator; I am a storyteller, a catalyst for change, and a curator of experiences. My journey, much like my art, is an ongoing narrative—one that unfolds with each word, each event, and each shared moment of inspiration.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Faith and Vision:
From a young age, I embraced the belief that with faith in a higher power and a clear vision, I could achieve anything. This foundation has been a guiding light, providing resilience in the face of challenges and fueling the determination needed to turn dreams into reality. My advice to those early in their journey is to cultivate a strong sense of faith, whether it be in a higher power, in themselves, or in the vision they hold for their future. Having a clear vision acts as a compass, steering one through the twists and turns of their professional and personal endeavors.
Work Ethic:
Growing up on a farm, I imbibed the fundamental principle that effort is directly correlated with reward. The invaluable lesson from my father, “If I do not work, I do not eat,” instilled a robust work ethic within me. In the early stages of one’s journey, it’s crucial to recognize the transformative power of hard work. Dedication and perseverance are the building blocks of success. My advice is to approach every task, no matter how small, with diligence and commitment. Each effort contributes to the larger mosaic of one’s journey.
Service and Mentorship:
The wisdom passed down from my family and mentors emphasized the importance of giving back and mentorship. Service to others and the act of guiding and uplifting the next generation became integral to my sense of purpose. For those starting their journey, my advice is to recognize the profound impact of service and mentorship. Seek opportunities to contribute to your community and industry. Paying it forward not only enriches the lives of others but also creates a network of support that can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of a career.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My upbringing is a testament to the enduring influence of my parents, who purposefully embedded core values that have guided my journey. From the earliest stages of my life, they instilled in me a potent combination of unwavering faith and a robust work ethic. I not only learned the intricacies of cultivating produce on our family farm but also gained practical insights by participating in selling these products in our local store, fostering a connection between hard work and tangible outcomes. Enveloped in the warmth of our church community from the womb, I became an active participant in Sunday School and found profound joy in contributing to various church activities. Above all, my parents impressed upon me the importance of family bonds and the transformative power of serving the broader community. These invaluable lessons have shaped my character, influencing how I approach work, relationships, and my commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
