We caught up with the brilliant and insightful La’mya Strothers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi La’mya, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Well I got my resilience from my mother while growing up, she is also a singer and her mother as well, my mom always had me and my siblings in church, and we were in a choir, but it was much so passed on in the family. I got my work ethic from training myself so that it can become automatic instead of a struggle. I developed it by being consistent with my time and becoming the better version of myself. I get my generosity from myself because growing up I didn’t have much, and I used to get bullied about my insecurities,so I feel like helping people that are struggling and dealing with things plays a big role on how people view you. I overcame it by people giving me positive feedback on my music and showing me how they care which motivates myself to keep going. I feel like I’m the only one in the room because im in my own world and I tend not to worry about others around me. I’m a big dreamer and I like to manifest on how I’m going to be successful so whatever is meant to be will be and blessings will come your way when your patient (wrote a song about it). I found my purpose by being passionate about my work and improving on different levels. I don’t really have any haters yet but I tend not to look for them lol. I drink lots of teas and water to make my voice clear and I do mini practices in my room that help with my vocal range. I get it mostly from myself because I’m my biggest critic so I find ways to be better at my craft. I developed it by working with people and peers and really anyone that’s older then me. I made decisions by getting support from my family and friends and also god. I kept my creativity going by seeing my friends create their ideas which motivated me to create my own and seeing what I’m capable of. I believe that you have to take risks to step out your comfort zone and you can’t progress without fear, so you have to take a step at a time to get to where u wanna be if you really want it.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a singer/songwriter, the things that I want to focus on is crossing out my goals and improving my singing to become better and my producing skills, I like to be independent about everything so that way I don’t have to count on someone to do it for me Because I feel like I have many talents just haven’t stepped out my comfort zone yet, but I am going to be working on that. Also learning different genres of music instead of just one which is r&b.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
What really impacted my journey was learning how to be patient with my time even when it gets hard to be consistent you still have to get up and try again the next day and be willing to be committed to what you do and take risks on how to progress because I feel like if you don’t try to commit and make progress then u don’t really want what your looking forward to no matter how bad you want it.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The person that helped me the most was my mother and really god because it’s times where I struggle to get back up and through her pep talks and gods word it really makes an effect right away to get back up and try again. Also it’s to me to see if I can make that change or not, not up to my mother or god, Even through just communicating I have bad social anxiety but most times you have to take risks in order to live the way u want.
