Meet Lanette Jantelle North

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lanette Jantelle North. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Lanette Jantelle, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
As a ceramic artist deeply immersed in the symbiotic relationship between nature and art, my creativity thrives on the perpetual dance with the elements. My passion for ceramics/pottery is fueled by the vibrant tapestry of flowers and herbs flourishing in my garden and all around me, with each bloom and leaf telling a unique story that resonates within many pieces of my work. The connection to nature becomes a wellspring of inspiration, infusing my creations with an organic authenticity. I often weave functionality and sculpture within my interior/exterior design pieces, crafting items that seamlessly integrate into daily life while standing as captivating elements on their own. My commitment to the balance of beauty and utility not only sustains my artistic expression but also invites others to experience the harmonious blend of nature and craftsmanship in their daily rituals. The ever-evolving tableau of my garden and the nature that surrounds me serves as a constant muse, ensuring that my creativity remains vibrant and deeply rooted in the essence of the natural world.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a passionate artist whose creative journey has been profoundly shaped by my deep connection to nature, various art mediums, which include pottery/ceramics. My artistic journey began at a young age of 3 years old when I found my love for sewing and painting, then when I began college at the University of Colorado to obtain my B.S degree in business and finance, I took some ceramics and sculpting classes. I loved how ceramics gave me an outlet to relieve the stress from my busy college and family life, as well as allow me to continue with my artistic expression and create pieces that simply just made me happy to share. It was in college that I discovered my affinity for clay—the malleable material that would become my canvas for expressing the beauty I found in the world around me. The tactile nature of ceramics allows me to bring to life the shapes, textures, and colors that had long captured my imagination, and it was an incredible feeling to build something from the ground up, add color glazes that would sometimes surprise me after opening my kiln, and seeing the vibrant pieces looking back up at me. Over the years, I have developed a unique organic, botanical artistic style that focuses on the exquisite details of nature. My work often features botanical motifs, including flowers, leaves, and herbs, delicately impressed into the clay. These natural imprints added an extra layer of depth and authenticity to my pieces.
In my studio, nestled in the heart of my garden, I meticulously craft my pieces. I embrace a holistic approach to my art, creating not just functional ceramics but pieces of beauty that transcended their utilitarian purpose.
The pieces I design are from every day living such as dinnerware sets, macrame ceramic wall hangings, cups and mugs, lighting and even saki bar sets, to botanical sculptures and figures.
My pieces have been exhibited at the Elliot Museum in Stuart, Florida and in art galleries located in South Florida as well as California. I have also had my art recognized in other art magazines.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey in ceramics and pottery, three transformative forces have shaped my artistic evolution. Firstly, a profound love for all forms of art has been the heartbeat of my creative venture. Secondly, an insatiable desire to learn has been the compass guiding me through uncharted territories. Lastly, I’ve embraced the challenge of pushing my abilities beyond their limits, exploring new techniques, and fearlessly venturing into unconventional realms of clays, glazing, and firing methods. To aspiring artists embarking on their creative odyssey, my counsel is a threefold symphony. Begin by immersing yourself in the art medium of your choice; let curiosity be your guide. My passion for art was cultivated during a nomadic childhood and extensive travels, absorbing the essence of museums and galleries across the US and beyond. Next, enroll in classes, devour knowledge from videos and books, and engage with fellow ceramic artists to expand your repertoire. Finally, practice relentlessly—master the fundamentals of wedging, hone your slab and coil building techniques, and find your rhythm on the potter’s wheel. In this intricate dance of exploration and dedication, true artistic prowess unfolds.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who appreciates and values the artistic process, allowing me the creative freedom to infuse my unique expressions into their commissions. Characteristics that define an ideal client for me include a genuine passion for art, an openness to innovative ideas, and a collaborative spirit that encourages a dialogue between the client’s vision and my artistic intuition. An ideal client understands the transformative power of art and trusts in my expertise to bring a personalized touch to each commission. This collaboration is most fulfilling when the client seeks a piece that not only aligns with their taste but also embraces the artistic journey, allowing for a harmonious blend of their vision and my creative interpretation.
