We were lucky to catch up with Lara Frazier recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lara, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Last year, a week after I broke up with my boyfriend at the time and moved into a new apartment, that apartment burned down. I lost about half of my stuff. About a month later, my car got broken into and more of my stuff got stolen. I was a peak self-hatred at that point. I think having such extreme things happen to me made me realize that hating myself was only causing me more pain and suffering, so I decided to try loving myself instead. I didn’t think it would be that easy, but it surprisingly did. I just kept acting like a person who loves themselves would. I told myself that I was beautiful, smart, funny, talented, and creative. I started believing the compliments people were giving me instead of thinking they were just being nice, and my quality of life improved drastically.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My mom enrolled me in dance classes when I was three years old like so many mom’s do. I stuck with it for much longer than a lot of girls my age. My mom saw how much I was enjoying it and enrolled me in theatre classes, and I’m sure she is still regretting it because there was no going back at that point. It was pretty clear that performing in front of an audience was where I felt the most comfortable and at home. It was definitely where I was happiest. I did theatre all the way into college then started working at Disneyland as a Jungle Cruise skipper. I had a lot of fun, but after my father passed away, it got harder and harder to put a smile on my face for eight hours straight five days a week. I was watching GLOW on Netflix with some friends of mine one night, and I was so drawn into the storytelling and theatrics that went into professional wrestling. So I moved back to the Bay Area and began training. It is definitely the hardest thing I have ever done, but it has also been the most fulfilling.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I think three qualities have been really impactful in my journey: adaptability, discipline, and storytelling. I studied ballet at an early age so discipline was drilled into me early. It’s that commitment to showing up, perfecting your craft, and pushing through discomfort that sets you apart in any field. Adaptability has been equally important. I’m constantly reacting to what’s around me. The ability to pivot and embrace change has been key to me thriving at no matter what I do. And finally, storytelling is at the heart of everything I do. As a wrestler, it’s not just about the moves; it’s about telling a story through those moves. Learning how to connect with your audience, no matter the platform, is a crucial skill. For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to focus on building discipline first—no skill will take you further than that. Then, be open to change and new challenges; adaptability is your friend. Lastly, never underestimate the power of storytelling. How you connect with others really makes an impact.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Probably my trainer, Anton Voorhees. I can go to him about literally anything, and he cones through when he can. He’s not only helped me grow as an athlete and a performer, but also as a human being. I cannot thank him enough for that. I don’t think I could ever repay him for all he’s done for me.
