Meet LaTanya Bowman

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LaTanya Bowman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi LaTanya, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from my family. Both of my parents were taught this at a young age through their parents, and it’s a generational teaching that has been ongoing, since the beginning of time. I have been working on my family ancestral roots presently, and have learned and gained so much knowledge of the sacrifices that my parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on has done, to even allow me to be where I am at as of today. It truly has awaken me in a different aspect of appreciation of the contributions my family as given to build this nation, as well as for my family survival. Resilience is a word that can not be taken lightly in the African-American and Native American communities. Resilience is a word that when used in the context of those two communities, it has the meaning of survival.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
To be honest, the skills of knowledge that I learned and was the most impactful on my journey was not learned from the classroom, but from every day life and reading lots of books. School doesn’t teach you how to be an entrepreneur, let alone a successful one. For you see many people who are inspired to become one, and even manage to start to be on track with it, but it doesn’t last. That’s where the resilience comes in, because being an entrepreneur isn’t for the faint of heart. I think sometimes I make this look “easy” to a lot of people, so they say to themselves, “Wow, okay if she can do it, so can I”. Which is true, but if you don’t have that tenacity, resilience, and a very healthy discernment inside of you, you can just forget it.

So if someone came to me today and said, “I want you to teach me what you do”, “I want to start my own business”. The first thing I would ask them is why? Because it can’t be about the money, it has to be about the end game. For example: Is it a lifestyle change so you can have more freedom, or are you using it to catapult yourself into something else? You have to really look deep inside of yourself and ask the real reason why, even if it sounds crazy it doesn’t matter.

Once you figure out the reason why, start journaling about it, and fix up a dream board, and steps on how are you going to get there. You actually got to start from the end, where you are wanting to be and work yourself backwards to your present, so you can have your stepping stones on the “how, when, and where”. From there that’s when things will start to manifest because know you have a game plan, (I call this, the business plan of life). But, just understand sometimes you may have bumps in the road, but you just have to stay focused on your end game.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The One Thing by Gary Keller & Jay Papasan

This book is a great skill set developmental book in planning your “Business Plan of Life”. It teaches you and helps you to look deeper within yourself, to ask that one fundamental question, “What is that one thing that I need to do in order to get me to that next step?”

It makes you realize sometimes you may have to shake up that tree a bit, and causes you to have to ask yourself several times within your game plan, “How Is This Serving Me”? This can go for things, people and places. You are going to see through each phase that you go through, you just might have to shake up that tree a bit. What worked for you previously, will most likely may not work for you presently, and that’s okay. If you are not doing this, that just means you are not evolving.
