Meet Laura Vargas

We were lucky to catch up with Laura Vargas recently and have shared our conversation below.

Laura, thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?
So, picture this: I finally land what feels like the ultimate grown-up job—a cushy gig with great pay and benefits, all from the comfort of my own home. Talk about hitting the jackpot, especially in the midst of pandemic uncertainty. Joining the insurance world seemed like a solid move, you know? Everyone needs insurance, so job security felt like a sure thing.

But here’s the kicker—I’ve been battling mental health demons since way back. Anxiety has been my unwanted sidekick since high school, throwing me for a loop with every big moment. I’d feel like death warmed over before dance team performances or even just going to school. Eventually, it got so bad I had to bail on traditional schooling altogether and grab a GED instead.

Fast forward to my twenties, and I’m still wrestling with the same old anxiety beast. It’s like this constant battle, trying to keep my head above water while feeling like I’m drowning inside. But hey, I’m a fighter, right? So, I throw myself into work, always striving for perfection to keep those self-doubts at bay.

Cut to one morning, and I just can’t face work. I call in sick, hoping a mental health day will work wonders. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. Days turn into weeks, and before I know it, I’m on medical leave, battling depression.

But you know what helped me through? DIY projects. It sounds cliché, but creating something tangible helped me reclaim a sense of purpose. So, I start making flower arrangements, and people actually love them. It’s a small win in the midst of chaos.

Then, on the day of my first market, I get the news—I’m being let go from my job. It hits hard, talk about a gut punch. But instead of crumbling, I decide to roll with it. I turn my little flower hobby into a legit business, Meraki Trade. It’s been a rollercoaster, but being my own boss has its perks.

Sure, anxiety still rears its head, and running a business isn’t always smooth sailing. But I’m still standing, still fighting. And that, my friend, is what matters.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At Meraki Trade, our name says it all. ‘Meraki’ is a Greek word that embodies putting soul, creativity, and love into everything we do. As a Taurus, an earth sign, I’m naturally drawn to earthly elements like flowers and crystals. It’s this connection to nature that infuses our creations with a special energy and authenticity.

What sets Meraki Trade apart is our passion for infusing every piece with personality and soul. We don’t just sell products; we curate experiences. From handcrafted floral arrangements to carefully selected home decor items, each piece tells a story and reflects our commitment to quality and individuality.

But we also like to have fun with it. Home decor shouldn’t be stuffy or boring—it should be an expression of your unique style and personality. That’s why we’re always exploring new trends and mixing traditional elements with modern twists. It’s about creating spaces that are as vibrant and dynamic as the people who inhabit them.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities have really stood out for me:

Resilience has been my rock, helping me bounce back from tough times like struggles with mental health and career challenges.

Creativity is my passion, driving me to infuse everything I do with my own unique touch.

And adaptability? Well, that’s been my secret weapon, allowing me to roll with the punches and find my way through life’s twists and turns.

For those starting out on their own journey, here’s what I’ve learned:

Embrace resilience when things get tough; it’s what helps you come back stronger.
Let your creativity shine—it’s what sets you apart and makes your journey uniquely yours.
And don’t forget to stay adaptable; life’s always throwing surprises your way, and being able to roll with them is key.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

One book that’s had a huge impact on my journey is “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. It’s one of those reads that just sticks with you.

The first agreement, “Be Impeccable with Your Word,” really hit home for me. It taught me the importance of honesty and kindness in how I communicate, helping me build stronger connections and trust.

Then there’s “Don’t Take Anything Personally.” That one really opened my eyes. It reminded me not to sweat the small stuff and not to let other people’s actions get under my skin.

“Don’t Make Assumptions” was another game-changer. It made me realize how often we jump to conclusions instead of just asking for clarification. Since then, I’ve been all about open communication.

And finally, “Always Do Your Best.” This one’s all about finding balance and giving it your all while still taking care of yourself. It’s a reminder to celebrate your wins, no matter how big or small.

Overall, “The Four Agreements” has been like a trusted friend, offering timeless wisdom and guidance whenever I need it.
