We recently connected with Lauren Busman and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
With the increase popularity of social media over the years, I found often found myself comparing my photographic work to others. Was I posing my clients correctly? Was my editing style as perfect as everyone else’s seemed to be?
As I continued to grow my business and skillset, I shared more of my work with friends, family, and on social media. By putting myself out there and becoming more confident in my work, I felt like I was finally “making it” and no longer comparing myself to others. Realizing there was no reason to feel like an imposter because everyone is on their own journey to becoming comfortable and confident in their respective fields and work was like a breakthrough to me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a wedding photographer based in Charleston, South Carolina. I love being there for my clients and being able to capture the moments that matter most to them as well as the in-between, often missed moments that are just as special. I’m still booking weddings in 2024 and would be happy to chat with couples who need a photographer that will be there for them every step of the way.
Also, I serve as the Director of Photography for a sustainable fashion concept called ECO Runways. We’re striving to bring like-minded people together to explore the intersection of fashion and sustainability while also giving back to the local community. This is such an exciting opportunity to create meaningful photographic art and promote slow fashion.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience, willingness to learn and ask questions, and speaking up were instrumental in my journey. For anyone who feels uncomfortable speaking up or asking questions, my best piece of advice is to go for it. You will be able to open so many doors by allowing yourself to be heard and asking questions when you can.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal clients are couples who have a strong connection with each other and their emotions. They aren’t afraid to be themselves. They live in the moment and want to create long-lasting memories so they can look back on them and relive their wedding day. They may be out-of-the-box thinkers and have unique ideas to showcase their love. They may be more laissez faire and just want me to be a fly on the wall during their special day.
