We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lawrence Gober. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lawrence below.
Lawrence, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I definitely inherited my strong work ethic from my parents. Growing up, I watched them work hard for everything they had, and that instilled the same drive in me. It reminds me that sometimes, I am my own obstacle, so getting up and doing the work can help me get where I need to be.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a versatile artist who loves both visual arts and software engineering. I specialize in photography, whether it’s in the studio, on location, or capturing events. I offer tailored services for brands looking to showcase their products, and I’m great at capturing the vibe of corporate events, highlighting the joy and excitement of the attendees.
What makes my photography unique is not just my artistic vision, but also my knack for turning that vision into high-quality photos that consistently go beyond my clients’ expectations. I take pride in delivering all finalized photos promptly, and I’m committed to making sure my clients are happy.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe that patience, determination, and social skills are all valuable qualities for an aspiring creator. Being patient with yourself is crucial, as it’s necessary when dealing with both clients and personal challenges. Opportunities may not always come when you expect them to, so having patience is key. Determination is essential because creating consistently, regardless of life’s challenges, is vital for growth. Developing a habit of creating helps to stay sharp and keeps creative ideas flowing.
Moreover, social skills play a crucial role in being a successful creator. Efficient communication with anyone you collaborate with is essential. I highly recommend cultivating these qualities for creators who are just starting their journey.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I believe that enhancing your skills in areas where you may not be as strong can significantly benefit your creativity in the long run. Moreover, it can contribute to overall improvement in whatever you do. Being well-rounded prepares you for various situations, ensuring you’re ready when opportunities arise.
For instance, when I initially focused solely on studio photography, I realized that branching out into event photography expanded my opportunities. Looking back over the past few months, many of the events I’ve been able to capture wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t diversified my skill set. So, my advice is not to hesitate to explore new areas, try different things, and work on strengthening your weaknesses. It can lead to unexpected opportunities and a more versatile skill set.
