Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leonel Sanchez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Leonel with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Where did I get my work ethic from? That is a great question! I work seven days a week and go to the gym at least five times weekly. I would say my perspective switched recently on this. For the last five years since I moved out at 18, I always thought I was working towards something that is a nice place to live, a cool car, or the ability to have my own freedom and get to my goals. I realized I was wrong. When I moved out at the age of 18, I wanted to be able to experience some freedom. I grew up in a very strict household ( I grew up in a cult-like church) where the church had direct control over the way my parents would raise me, from controlling the way we dressed to not being able to have electronics and even forcefully being pulled out of school and being homeschooled, It was pretty tough! Every time I felt some control, something that the church said was out of my control would come in and negatively impact my life. In the last month, after looking at some old photos and deeply going through my childhood, I that I have never been trying to run to more astonishing things or to get to my goals, but the real reason I have a solid work ethic is that I am terrified for something to happen that is out of my control that can emotionally hurt or even destroy and the real reason is that I want to be safe and that safety comes from having the funds to be able to do what I want when I want and be at peace of mind that I control the things in my life and living in this country freedom and safety comes from having the capital to do so.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I go by Leo; I’m pursuing a sales career and working on my mentorship program. My life changed while I was working my regular 9 to 5 job, and they ended up changing the pay structure from getting paid on an hourly basis to getting paid for what I did regarding conversations and sales. Before, while on hourly, I was just making around $20/hour, not horrible but not great. The structure changed two years into my career, and I started getting paid per conversation and sale. This significantly impacted the way I think because back then, no matter what I did, I was paid the same. But getting paid depending on my skills put me into a self-optimization mindset, and I would think, “How Can I be faster?” ” How can I become better?” This changed my life within a few months, and I started making much more money than I used to. Things were nice, and I just kept thinking the same way and started upgrading my work setup by getting a high-end keyboard, Some Ultra-wide monitor, and upgrading my workspace as much as possible. Of course, this motivation only lasted a few months, and then I stopped growing for a few months until one day while hiking, I realized so many things I was doing wrong. I was not prioritizing my health, I ate fast food around five times a week at least. I had no fitness habits, and I did not do much learning either. But after this Hike, I left with one thing, and that was to pick up a fitness habit. I got into rock climbing, and it took me about three months to consistently go every day. About 2-3 months after that, I realized I needed to transfer my consistency from going to the gym daily to my career and income goals, so I merged it. I started rock climbing and working every single day. This is when my life changed because I had never really been consistent with anything. Within a month, I doubled my income (about a year ago) in September of 2022. What I made in the first three quarters of the year combined, I made in the last quarter. I then felt capped and knew I needed a new career since I was making more than my boss’s boss at this point, and getting a promotion would not cut the type of pay increase I wanted. I had heard that in almost every industry in sales, people were making multiple six and even seven figures, so I ended up spending $10k in mentorship programs to get into the space prepared for success. Nine months later, I am now currently partnered with three different companies in sales, from Helping people start an Amazon FBA Business To a Stock Automation Company and a company that provides AI automation to healthcare agencies. I am currently working on my mentorship program. I will be helping people mentally/emotionally and maybe even getting them into the sales world since it is a pretty cool career that can be done from home. My life purpose is to experience, learn, and impact the most people I can by providing value everywhere I go.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most impactful thing I experienced was getting paid per task/sale/production and what you do over your general time (hourly rate or salary); this leaves room for self-optimization, where you control your income depending on your skill level.
One other thing is a lot of people are scared to invest in themselves; I believe change happens when you are uncomfortable, and sometimes paying a good amount of money to learn something makes you value it a lot more, pushing forward way faster than just going the free youtube videos route.
Consistency! If there is one thing I have learned, be consistent with everything you do that pushes you closer to your goals. I used to think working every day was crazy and unreasonable; Now I believe that every day you use either puts you closer to your goals or makes them farther away depending on what was done.
I had to include this one. One Huge thing that has helped me out with being resilient from a mindset standpoint is practicing meditation/breathwork daily. It is an excellent way to de-stress and recharge.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Even though my childhood was controlled, I loved it. I appreciated it a lot Because I feel if I had been raised in an average household, I would have probably been comfortable living at my parent’s house versus moving out at 18. I do feel like a big reason I am where I am today is that I was put in a situation where I had to figure it out, and this made me grow.
