We were lucky to catch up with Levi Kirby recently and have shared our conversation below.
Levi, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I always like to lead with gratitude. If I wake up and me and my family are healthy, it’s a good day. When you are purposeful about being grateful, it makes being optimistic quite easy. I simply focus on all of the things I have to be thankful for in my life whenever a challenge comes my way or pessimism starts to creep in. It seems like we stress about a lot of things that, in the grand scheme of life, are minor and shouldn’t take any positive energy away from us. I like to focus on what really matters, work hard, and trust my gut; the rest often falls into place.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
On January 1, 2022, SplyceHouse was launched by myself and my business partner, Jake Huber. I came from an agency background, while Jake had more of an independent contractor history. We created SplyceHouse utilizing all of our experiences, good and bad, in an attempt to create an environment, culture, and brand we could be proud of. We wanted to create an organization that valued people and passion. Now, approximately 20 months later, we have just hired our 8th employee, and we anticipate continued growth! We want clients and employees to want to be associated with SplyceHouse. The goal is to create things together in a way that is impactful, meaningful, and fun. We are still a very young company and have a long way to go, with a lot to learn, but the past 20 months have been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to see where the next 20 months takes us.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful characteristics that have helped me along my journey are: gratitude, humility, and having fun. Given that, my advice to anyone on any journey is to soak up every experience. Learn from everyone and everything. Each time I’m on-set or meet a new client I learn something new. Then I take that learning and add it to my arsenal in order to draw from it whenever needed down the road. I like to say, “Experience is like compound interest.” What I mean by that is, with every new experience, if you learn from it, down the road all of those experiences will combine to make your decision-making better, faster, and easier. Not to mention, many of the people you meet along the way will inevitably show up in your life in some capacity 5, 10, 15 years down the road. That’s why it’s so important to always work hard, always be nice, and (in my personal opinion) always be early!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I love reading, and I have a long list of books that have helped me along my journey. Surprisingly, very few of them have to do with the creative industry, and many of them have to do with developing mental toughness. The book I most recently read is called, “Never Finished” by David Goggins. While the author is heavily into physical goals, the book is more about developing a mindset that enables you to accomplish anything you want in this life. As a lifelong creative who is now also a business owner, much of how I operate daily and how I keep my priorities in-check has to do with my attitude. Attitude is a choice regardless of circumstance. Positivity breeds more positivity, while negativity breeds more negativity. I choose to be positive, prioritize when I’m feeling overwhelmed, and remember what’s really important in life when I start to get stressed. One of my favorite quotes from this book is, “The only thing more infectious than a good attitude is a bad one.” Another quote I love from this book says, “A person who refuses to quit has a lot of tools at their disposal…”
