Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lexey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lexey, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
What an interesting question and perhaps one that will evolve over time. At this place in my life, I think I have done a fair amount of soul searching and trial and error to feel like I am doing what I should be, something I love, and just happen to be have others appreciate it to make it my livelihood. I have always enjoyed doing something new and unexpected and taking a fair amount of risk that others may not be comfortable with. WIth that mindset, I think I was able to differentiate myself and do something unique that people don’t see every day. I’ve played violin classically as a child through high school and then started Djing. During the pandemic I curiously managed to combine the two talents and become a DJ that is also an Electric Violinist! It is a purpose I couldn’t have predicted but rings true to my talents, interest in music, and passion for performance.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m lucky enough to call myself a musician. I came from a classically trained background on violin, started djing for fun during college and eventually was smart enough to combine the two talents that I never thought went together. I think being able to break free from the status quo is one of the most liberating and oftentimes lucrative things you can do. I inadvertently challenged some stereotypes as a female DJ at a time that there weren’t too many and continued to evolve my creative and artistic skills by learning to improvise on violin. I began playing violin on my own sets and other DJs and grew a following and passion for performance. It’s fun to surprise people during a DJ set with a wireless electric violin and have the freedom to interact with your audience. Music to me brings a great amount of joy and connection to people that may not otherwise have something in common and any time you are able to create a sense of unity is a wonderful feeling!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
. Not every day will be a home run. There will be some days that feel like a grind and due to things outside of your control may feel like your purpose is not worthwhile. There has to be a certain sense of thick skin and resilience to go through those and get to the days, events, and moments as brief as they may be that make it seem worthwhile.
A learning and teachable mindset. There were people before you and others that will come after. I think it’s important to continue to grow and be open to new ideas and ways of doing things. There’s fun in the uncertainty of things and the ability to evolve as an artist and as a person.
Taking care of all of yourself and not just your “work” you. Whether it’s waking up early, choosing healthy meals, exercising, keeping up with family and friends, or taking care of your mental health. I think in order to function in a creative business, it’s important to think about the whole package. While easier said than done, dedicating some time to nurture yourself will yield many benefits in the long run.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I’m an avid reader and audible junkie so on any give month I consume far too many wonderful books. In the last few months some memorable books have been: Think Like a Monk – Jay Shetty, reminded me to breath and find peace in everyday life. Originals – Adam Grant, how to think outside the box and overcome self doubt to find new creative paths. The Tools – Barry Michels, Phil Stutz, to me one of the most life changing titles and a reread when going through difficult times. This book brings to light some actionable solutions to problems we all face and teaching us how to approach future obstacles in a more constructive way. Behave – Robert Sapolsky, such an interesting look from a primatologist and neurobiologist point of view of why we behave the way we do. I can go on… but that should keep you busy for a few weeks. I’m endlessly curious to learn about topics outside my own sphere and am lucky to have audible as my companion for that!
