We were lucky to catch up with Lily Monge recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lily, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I always had this feeling of wanting more than a regular 9-5 career, but at the time it felt so unrealistic to achieve these big dreams when I was internally going through the darkest times. Few are aware, but since 2019, I’ve battled with severe anxiety that has left me hospitalized more than once. It’s been a long journey of trails and errors since then but I finally feel like I’m in a place where I’ve learned to control anxious feelings and recognize that they’re only moments, and these moments do not defining me entirely. Through the help of my therapist and holistic tools I have shifted my mindset and life to be in a more peaceful, grounded state which has given me the confidence to start working on those big dreams. The feeling and urgency of wanting more from life; finding my purpose is what kept me going.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Lily and I am a licensed esthetician who specializes in eyebrows. Some of my most popular services are brow wax, brow lamination and microblading. I have the most fun job in the world where I get to sit and chat with different people while making them feel beautiful. Connecting with people fills my cup with joy and at the end of the day that’s all I could ask for. I have been in this industry for 3 years and can see how I can easily shift and keep growing. The next thing on my list to master would be fine line tattooing.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Being a student — be open to constructive feedback because how else will you learn if you think your way is the only way 2. Being adaptable to change – not every thing will go exactly how you planned so being okay with that and thinking quick on your toes will help
3. Remaining optimistic – regardless of what is happening you need to keep positive that it will all workout for you in the end
My best advice to improve on your skills would be to invest in continuing education. There are always new techniques or mentors you can learn from to perfect your craft.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
“The Universe Has Your Back” by Gabrielle Bernstein was THE book that skyrocketed my healing journey with anxiety. Gabby talks about connecting to a higher force, moving with love instead of fear and asking for guidance from this larger force. This book helped me find myself and I recommend it to every single person.
