We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Lord a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I am not sure that imposter syndrome is ever truly overcome. But over the years I have learned a few tricks to help me find my unique value and how to share it with the world. One of the biggest ways to overcome imposter syndrome is to find your value and uniqueness. If you can find out what makes you valuable and WHY, then you aren’t comparing yourself to everyone else. When you combine your character traits, experience and unique perspective, you aren’t worried about the other business owners or people who are doing the same thing you are. You can have certainty that what you have to offer is different and unique and that makes you not have to worry about what anyone else is doing.
Another way that I overcome imposter syndrome is my faith. I am a child of God and He has uniquely created me for a purpose and when I know that, I can be rooted in who I was made to be and figuring out how to share that with the world. I don’ t have to be like anyone else….and I don’t want to be.
I love walking other business owners through this process of finding their value and how that relates to their business and their brand so they can move forward with confidence!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My business journey began 13 years ago when I needed to make an extra $500. I was a mom with three kids at home who wanted to be a stay at home mom, but needed to help make ends meet for my family. As a former teacher I knew that if I went back to teaching, by the time I paid for childcare, I would have only cleared $500 a month. I knew I could figure out a way to make some money to help my family and when I borrowed my sister’s camera and started taking family pictures, I was hooked.
The extra money I brought in for my family was a game changer but I was still struggling. I didn’t know how to take my business to the next level and get beyond the side hustle phase.
I finally unlocked the next level of my business when I confidently stepped into my brand and learned to show up authentically and figure out how to speak to my clients. Now I have the confidence to show up in my marketing, social media and every aspect of my business. And I love helping other business owners do the same.
If you are worried that your brand is causing you to lose money or clients, I have a brand breakdown quiz that helps business owners find the gaps in their brand and how to fix them so you can start attracting the right client who will be dying to work with you! Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. You have to know who you are talking to and what they are struggling with. What problem are you solving for them and why is it important to them? If you are talking to everyone, then you are talking to no one!
2. Once you know your dream customer, then you have to figure out your messaging and how to connect with them on a deep level. You aren’t just solving the obvious problem, you have to dive into the emotions behind the problem if you are really going to connect with them. Storytelling is also a huge part of the process and you have to learn to be a great storyteller.
3. Lastly, you have to get the messaging to them. This is where so many business owners struggle and this is where your branding really kicks in. You have to have a great website that is professional and speaks to your dream customer and then ASK. So many business owners forget this key factor. You have to ask them to do something. Call them to action. Whether that is a comment on social media, contacting you via your website or inviting them to download a PDF. It is all about connection and action.
Branding covers all of these areas (and a few others) so really knowing your brand and dialing in your Vision, Voice, Value, Visuals and Vehicle are key to making money in your business.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Networking and collaboration is starting to be a lost art! It makes me so sad to think of business owners sitting behind their computers toiling away in frustration and loneliness.
We are meant to be in community. Entrepreneurs tend to struggle with this because we work from home and don’t have people that we see on a daily basis to encourage, challenge and collaborate with and it is HARD!
I love working with other entrepreneurs and meeting up with other business owners. I am a huge believer in the fact that “iron sharpens iron” and that we are meant to have other people in our lives and businesses that can speak truth, encourage and brainstorm to make life more meaningful, fun and productive.
I am the co-host of a podcast called “The Christian Business Breakdown” for faith driven entrepreneurs who are looking to build their businesses with God at the center. It is a place where we share practical business advice, encouragement and challenge women business owners to be the CEO of their business! I also love to help other business owners tap into their full potential through their branding! You can take this quiz to see if your brand is working at its full potential. https://lilophotography.hbportal.co/public/brandbreakdownquiz
