We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Mermella a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
As someone who is diagnosed with Bi Polar, it has not always been an easy road. Including finding the road to recovery and healing, but once I found the grounding I needed I basically ran with it and continued to stick with it. It has not been an easy road in the fact that at the time I was actively receiving help since I was 11 years old. Several misdiagnosis until I was 17, but during that period of trying to figure me out. I never lost hope. Fast forward when I was officially diagnosed with Bi Polar at 17, everything just made sense. (I am now 23) It was like all the puzzle pieces came together. It’s not about overcoming mental health especially being deeper rooted, but more so how to work with yourself and love all versions of yourself. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Every bump in the road is a learning experience on how to improve next time it happens again. Personally for me developing healthy coping mechanisms and finding a hobby goes a long way. It’s one big influence on why I created my business later down the line. My small business is such a therapeutic experience for me each and every time!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Lisa Mermella. I am the small business creator of Lisa’s Sugar Fix – I specialize in homemade cookies and brownies, with my best seller being Oatmeal Cream Pies! I’m a one woman show as I create everything myself, and control all the marketing behind my business. I created my business as of March 2020 just for fun, but as of January 2022 it has become my full time job. I am based in Devine, Texas, but originally first started from South San Antonio. Creating homemade sweets is such a rewarding process to see. From beginning to end it’s such a lovely process, from creating dough to the finished product all packaged up! What makes it even more special is the customer’s satisfaction. I have such a great supportive community around my business in all parts of Texas! They never disappoint to show the love. I will always be incredibly thankful for my supporters. Everyone has their own etiquette that makes them special, but beyond my creations – I feel it’s me as a person. I go above and beyond for my customers, and treat them as if they’re my life long friends. It so important and refreshing to do what you love especially when it comes down to your line of work.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
What is very important as I evolved is becoming organized, having a routine, and communication. Being organized with my ingredients and kitchen has been such a huge help. It helps that I know where everything is at while not struggling to get to it leading to me to become quick with prepping dough. Having a routine on my end is so important – before I use to just be all over the place with my orders. I was lacking time for myself, my partner, & my family. Developing a routine such as taking on orders for specific days has helped me improve a balance within my life while still making profit. Last but not least…Communication. Communication is so important in every aspect. Wether it’ll be good or bad, ALWAYS let your customer know. I promise they will understand. Very few occasions have something gone wrong when creating, but don’t shy away from informing your customer and improving the experience.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
If this so happened to be my last decade, I feel a very important role is to never stop growing and evolving to be and do better. I’m naturally a giver wether it is mentally or spiritually. I will continue to give 100% efforts towards my friendships, relationship, and family. I had a hard past, but I want to be inspiration that you can pull yourself out of it and transform your mentality and lifestyle. I would want to spend the last decade filled with love and happiness.
