We were lucky to catch up with Liz Hansen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Liz, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
While this may be surprising to some, I have always really enjoyed working. Even as a young child, I loved to pretend to be at work as a doctor, a teacher or an artist. I love the satisfaction I get from completing a project. I enjoy seeing an develop into something beautiful and fully formed. Even if I won the lottery and didn’t have to work for financial reasons, I would still seek to have meaningful work in my life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner and photographer at the Chicago Boudoir Photography studio I empowers women to celebrate their lives, bodies and relationships through beautiful portraits.
I have been a professional photographer since 2011 and I truly believe that boudoir is for everyone, regardless of age, size or shape. I love how beautiful portraits empower women to gain confidence and recognize their unique beauty.
A decade ago, I signed up for my own boudoir photoshoot. I was super nervous to strip down in front of a stranger, but the experience was transformative for me. After the shoot, I felt an inner expansiveness and a greater desire to take risks. I felt ready to stand up and show up in new ways. I started my boudoir business because I wanted to offer this confidence-building opportunity to others!
As part of my mission to empower women in all areas of their lives, I have created a Facebook group and invited local women to be a part of my online community. This group has grown to 10,000 women and is a fun, safe and uplifting place for women to chat, grow, get advice and promote their businesses.
I have been featured on the TEDx stage, on National Public Radio, in the Chicago Reader and with the Association of International Boudoir Photographers.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Integrity. Every aspect of the business must be run with honesty and integrity. Trust is the foundation of every client relationship. 2. Commitment. My business is not a hobby. It’s not something I work on “when I feel like it.” I am committed to my business success every single day. 3. Problem solving. In business, there are always going to be fresh hurdles to face. At each moment, I remind myself “everything is figure-out-able!”
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
It is easy to feel overwhelmed as a business owner, especially if you are a solopreneur. My advice is to get comfortable with outsourcing! You really can’t do it all yourself. Find competent people that you trust to take things off of your plate. When things feel heavy, make sure to take time for self-care. I love to clear my mind by swimming laps and meditating.
