We were lucky to catch up with Lola recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lola, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
Creativity manifests through inspiration and life experiences. I went through a spell of writer’s block. Think about something that you have been through, good or bad. Find something or someone that inspires you, and creativity will flow. Some of the best songs that I have written came from life experiences.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am Brittani L. Samuels, an upcoming artist from Dallas, Texas. I am known professionally as Lola. I have taken a different career path since my last feature in Bold Journey Magazine. Singing and songwriting have always been my passion. Now, I am ready to make my debut. I recently released my first single, called “Energy.” “Energy” is about not losing yourself in a relationship. It is about loving yourself enough to walk away from something that no longer serves you. Each song that I write is a personal story. I take a lyrical approach to my artistry. “Energy” is my first single, but it is one of many. I am ready to showcase my versatility as an artist and writer. I have new songs coming out soon and collaborations with other artists that I am excited about! “Energy” is available on all streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and more!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Having confidence, strength, and determination has impacted my journey the most. My confidence took work. I still have my insecure moments. Discouragement and self-doubt have kept me away this long. That’s where my determination comes from. I am too determined not to go back to that place. I have a point to prove to myself and goals to reach. I have to see it through. My advice for people early in their journey is to know who you are and never lose sight of your goals.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I incorporate at least one day of me-time into my schedule every week. I will have a self-care day dedicated to me and no one else. I also listen to music to decompress. Music is most therapeutic for me when I feel overwhelmed, whether writing or listening to it. My advice would be to always take time out for yourself. Your mental and emotional health is so important. If you do not have yourself together, you can do nothing for anyone else. Dysfunction causes delays. I have learned that the highest form of self-care when you are overwhelmed is rest.
