We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lorenzo Pozzan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lorenzo below.
Hi Lorenzo, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
I used to experience discipline and self-discipline as rather oppressive concepts, closely tied with rigor, obedience and of course hefty punishment when willpower inevitably faltered, causing the loss of said discipline. It wasn’t until I was exposed to the notion that confidence is your reputation with yourself, basically a result of your follow-through with you, that my perspective completely changed.
Self-discipline morphed into a practical manifestation of self-love, where by owning my actions, negotiating with myself and setting out realistic tasks to accomplish, I was not only getting those tasks done, but also, furthering my personal development, building confidence.
What I had previously experienced as a vicious cycle turned into a virtuous one, where I actually enjoy carrying out the small tasks that my growth is composed of.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I try to live with intense presence and passion, setting myself up to experience a rich life, exposed to a variety of human experiences, stories, cultures and nature. I do this in order to be able to pour what I experience into everything I do, from the creation of a character I will play on screen, to the understanding of a mental hurdle that needs to be overcome in order to optimize mindset. My typical process as an actor is to daydream many aspects of a character, big or small, to create a full fledged human, from the food they like to eat, to the weather they enjoy, their style, musical tastes, idiosyncrasies, tics, to the books they like to read and their workout of choice, if they even do any of these things.
As such, observing everything from human interactions to the architecture of a place to stories or soundbites at a random cafe’ table provides a rich variety of images to compose a beautiful collage of the story you are trying to tell.
Something as unrelated as a run without headphones can turn into an almost voyeuristic peek into 10 second segments of people’s conversations along your path.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Can I give you four…? Patience, resilience, grace and faith. A life worth living is handcrafted, dreamt and assembled with deliberacy and intent.
In a world where we are often exposed to hundreds of thousands of stimuli, something as apparently simple as finding your passion, purpose and “why” can be extremely difficult, it can require thousands of hours of trial, error, heartbreak, redirection and subsequent emotions and feelings.
Being graceful, and starting with ourselves is of paramount importance. The resilience to get back up and try again is just as fundamental. Without patience, none of this would be practically possible, and without faith, none of it would be emotionally sustainable.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the past, I would have answered needing to underline that the last period of time has been quite the storm. Today, I have learned how to not only dance, but live and blossom under said storm. Trivially, you could say I have learned to “let go”, but not the faux-existential notion of letting go as an excuse not to try. Rather, I have learned to do things out of love for doing them, with passion, giving it my all, and abandon the notion of cultivating external expectations based on my actions. This in turn has freed up tons of space, energy and creativity previously engaged in the exquisitely deleterious habit of projecting, thus making ‘doing’ more energizing.
Also, because we almost talked about books, I do love “The Alchemist”.
