Meet Lupe Cambiasso

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lupe Cambiasso a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lupe , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
In my opinion we are all working on our confidence throughout our lives. In my case, being an artists helped me to build up my self-esteem by try and failure. We need to be open to criticism about our work and we also put ourselves out there when auditioning or looking for a job. Those types of experiences try us and allow us to test our strength. My family played an important role in building my confidence. I was always told I was smart enough and talented enough to do anything I wanted to do. Having people around  trusting in me, loving me and encouraging me was crucial to build my self-esteem.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I was born in Argentina, South America. All my life I wanted to act. I though it would be difficult to come to Los Angeles to pursue my dream but after a few years I made my dream come true. I applied for an artist visa and I moved here. My family helped me a lot in this long, hard and expensive journey. After four years of being here I have learned a lot about the immigration process for artists so I decided to help others in their journeys as well. I got two O-1 visas approved and then I was able to get my green card. That is why I’ve created “Dreaming of a visa”, a space where people can ask me questions about the O-1 visa and where I share tips and suggestions regarding the arduous task of preparing their case. I am also available to advise those applicants that need help before they start working with a lawyer. I know by experience that gathering all the evidence for this type of application can be stressful and annoying, so since I really enjoy doing it, I thought I could be helpful to those who need advice in this matter. I upload videos and testimonials of people I helped in my instagram: @dreamingofavisa
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Acting is my passion, my profession, my purpose in life. I think studying acting is very important to deeply understand the craft. Not only because you learn how to work with others, respect others, but also because you train your imagination, your perception and understanding of the human condition. Which is the ultimate objective of an actor. Be able to comprehend what makes us humans and therefore being able to bring a character to life in a very sincere and believable way.
Being humble is also really important: as an artist you must trust your teacher, your director and your peers. You need to embrace their opinions and points of view and not to take anything personally. The path of an actor is full of obstacles and the willingness of becoming a better actor and a better human being is what makes you thrive. Your humbleness will take you places.
Stella Adler once said: to grow as an actor and as a human being are synonymous.
So…the better understanding of your inner self you have, the better actor you’ll become. Learning about ourselves, our flaws, our traumas, our desires, our behavior patterns, our childhood, things that we were told to think or feel, make our minds expand and consequently as an artist we get deeper and wiser. The key is not to judge, but to understand, learn and comprehend.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
All the teachers I had in my career were fundamental to where I stand today. Their passion for the craft, their generosity to share what they’ve learn, the compassion they show when they gave me feedback, the trust they had in me. These are just a few things I can say about them and how important they were in my journey. I learned how to be respectful with others and to the craft, I’ve understood how important is to trust my instincts but also work hard in understanding the character. I overcame my insecurities (even though I’m still working on it) thanks to their support and confidence in me.
But also, as I said before, my parents were so important in my development as a person and as an actor. They were always supporting me, encouraging me to trust my talent, always telling me “You can do this! We are here for you”. And I think this was the most amazing thing that happened to me: having the best parents I could’ve asked for! They love me and trust in me, and they even agreed for me to come to America, even though that meant leaving my hometown and being far from them. I consider that the most selfless act of love. And I really hope one day I could be a great parent, as they are to me.
