We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lydia Gomez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lydia below.
Lydia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I think that our purpose and the search for it undergoes evolution with time. I also firmly believe that there isn’t just one shiny purpose that will miraculously solve everything for us. Instead, I believe that as we go through life, we gather experiences and develop ideas that shape what we perceive as our purpose.
Without even realizing it, my various jobs allowed me to discern what aspects of each role brought me joy and which ones I didn’t quite enjoy. Most invaluable was discovering what I didn’t want!
This process led me to paint a clearer picture of what would truly make me happy. I found myself asking questions like: “Okay, I like this position, but what can I do to improve it for myself? Is there a career out there that fulfills these requirements?” I knew I wanted to work in education, so I reflected on how I wanted to support students and families on a day-to-day basis.
One of my dreams was to be my own boss, and in 2020 I was nudged to entrepreneurship– by accident! Looking back, I believe it was precisely what I needed. Now, I possess more control over how I can assist families, armed with valuable insights and data into what parents are truly seeking. This newfound understanding fuels my creativity and prompts me to think of ways in which I can contribute in those areas that may be missing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
During my late teens, I developed a fascination for delving into the world of entrepreneurship. I would spend hours on research, combing through countless articles, and following the journeys of successful business founders. Countless hours were spent on YouTube, absorbing knowledge on various aspects of business.
Ultimately, I took the plunge and attempted to launch small businesses in the realm of fashion and accessories, but they didn’t pan out as I had hoped. However, these experiences, combined with my extensive research, taught me invaluable lessons. I learned what worked, what didn’t, and discovered key aspects of myself that contributed to the shortcomings of those ventures.
Throughout my college years, while pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, I juggled part-time and full-time jobs. As graduation approached, I began asking myself those questions about purpose. It dawned on me that the roles where I felt the most content and fulfilled involved working with children.
Then came the summer of 2020, and a job opportunity I had hoped for fell through, leaving me jobless and feeling the weight of stress. With the experience from previous job roles and experience in attempting entrepreneurship, I decided to take matters into my own hands and create my own opportunity.
I felt confident in my teaching abilities, I was determined to offer my service, driven by a passion for teaching. All of this led to the birth of Birdie Learning Academy. I am deeply grateful to the families who place their trust in me for their child’s educational needs. What I do brings me immense joy, not only because I get to teach, but also because it allows me to be creative and acquire unexpected new skills along the way.
I think there are not many homeschooling programs—especially for secular families—that offer the parent and child a high level of flexibility and personalized attention like we do at Birdie Learning Academy. We value open communication and collaboration with parents, recognizing that they play a crucial role in their child’s education journey. With our teaching approach and emphasis on inclusion, diversity and curiosity, we create a nurturing environment that sets us apart from the rest.
We currently provide two highly beneficial homeschooling programs designed to alleviate homeschooling responsibilities for the parents while supporting and nurturing the child’s educational growth.
At Birdie Learning Academy, we also provide an enriching monthly Kids Bilingual Story Time workshop, which includes an arts and craft activity. Additionally, we provide new homeschooling parents with a complimentary course to learn about the fundamentals of homeschooling. We are excited to introduce the Birdie Community, an online platform that fosters parental learning, active participation in discussions about homeschooling.
We are thrilled to announce our latest offerings at Birdie Learning Academy! These include our 1.) second homeschooling program option, 2.) a comprehensive course designed to equip new homeschooling parents with the basics, and 3.) the Birdie Community, our online platform for parents to learn and contribute about homeschooling.
We are dedicated to listening and addressing the needs of parents. I invite you to explore our services and spread the word to your friends. Come, be a part of our growing educational community!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Some qualities that are the most impactful in this journey is that I am observant and analytical. Skills that have made an impact are being bilingual and skills obtained from my training in higher education.
My observant nature enables me to perceive the nuances of situations, while my analytical mindset empowers me to make informed and thoughtful decisions. Additionally, being bilingual has proven to be a valuable asset. The skills honed through my higher education training have played a vital role in shaping my path, equipping me with the tools needed to excel and make a meaningful impact.
I consider myself to be still early on in my journey as well. I believe that those who find themselves in a similar situation as I am should continue to observe what is working well and identify areas that can be improved. An essential lesson I’ve learned from Jereshia Hawk is the notion that there will always be seasons in both business and life. These seasons may include periods of growth, learning, and rest. Each season holds its unique value, and it’s crucial that we embrace and leverage them to our advantage. Above all, the key is to persevere and keep moving forward!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I would like to give credit to my parents, siblings and my husband. My parents paved a pivotal role in enabling me to pursue a higher education, which has opened doors to vast learning opportunities not only academically but also personal growth. They are my role models and I am privileged to continue to learn and be guided by them.
My siblings have been an incredible source of inspiration by providing me an exemplary path to learn from. Additionally, my husband has been remarkably supportive and nurturing as I navigate self-employment. He’s taught me valuable lessons in patience and maintaining focus on my goals. He provides me with so much motivation and encouragement that helps me overcome internal challenges, for which I am grateful.
