Meet Lylah Healy

We recently connected with Lylah Healy and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Lylah, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
As a female entrepreneur I have always wanted to bring a level of intentionality and care into my daily business interactions. One way I put this into practice is by actively listening.

I have always loved stories and the art of storytelling, and I think people’s lives are so fascinating. Really listening to someone during a conversation supports my success in connecting with people, and it also helps me understand my clients and what their day to day life looks like.

When people leave our conversation I want them to feel like I really understood and cared about what they had to say. There are so many tools, and gadgets, and devices and events that keep us all busy these days, and it is easy to get swept into it. I make an effort to slow down and I want people to know how important and valued they are.

Maya Angelou’s quote has always resonated with me. “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” When people think of me or Rose Lake Design, I hope they remember us for how we listened and how we made them feel unique, understood, and valued.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Rose Lake Design started as a passion. It was born in the pursuit of living a beautiful life; A life well-lived. For me home is a place for celebration, rest, rejuvenation and inspiration. It began with me designing my own home which I shared on social media. I received positive responses from those posts and built the company in my free time and on weekends. By no means was I an overnight success. I had discovered a career that I loved and it completely resonated with who I was as a person. I knew it would take time to build the business to what I envisioned due to my limited resources with time. For a few years I ran the company while holding a full-time job, but I knew that Rose Lake Design wasn’t something I could give up on. I knew that if I worked on it little by little each day, that someday it would be big enough that I could leave my full-time job and run the company as the Principal Designer.

I think that if something is in your heart it’s important to pursue it. I’m so glad I didn’t let the “what if’s?” take over. Believe me, they were there! But I had to tell them to take a back seat. There are so many reasons that can sneak into your thoughts as to why you shouldn’t do something. You have to decide that they won’t win and change your mindset. What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Believe that you won’t fail and then act into it.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The journey of entrepreneurship is not an easy one but it is definitely rewarding. During the journey I think it’s important to adopt an attitude of learning. Setbacks are inevitable, but it’s the learning process and improvement that sets you on the right path. Stay humble, and remember to have fun!
