Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lynn Mulhern. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lynn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Knowing who you are and what your abilities are enable you be successful even if you are different from everybody else. The more often you make good decisions the more confident you become in making difficult ones. Sharing responsibility helps create success. In the rescue world, it takes a village to get things done. Trusting in colleagues has been key to allowing me to be successful in a world where most people don’t understand what companion animal Rescue is all about.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Community Cat Foundation is a nonprofit feline rescue. Our mission is to merge the goals of the local community with compassionate care for the cats who live there, advocating for both. We provide sanctuary for certain feral cats, rescue cats and kittens, perform trap-neuter-release services and educate homeowners and businesses on best practices for outdoor cats. When we learn of unique situations we try to step in and provide resolution. Our facility has been home for people and their pets and a sanctuary for cats losing their outdoor home. In special circumstances we have rehabilitated cats who were given up for dead.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
To be successful you need passion and persistence. You’re going to be successful if you believe in yourself and create a plan, asking for guidance from people with the same goals. Rescue work absolutely takes a “village” of people. Every member of the team at Community Cat Foundation has a valuable role and skills that make us successful. Organizers create teams, coordinators train, volunteers socialize, and veterinarians help us provide rehab care. Without our interns, transporters, caretakers, and donors, we could not do what we do.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Transitioning from a Rescue to a shelter is the long-term goal of Community Cat Foundation. We need collaborators, investors, carpenters, and people who will partner with us. We want to expand the services we offer, seek out a location that will enable us to grow, and build a team of caretakers, volunteers, and organizers to make that dream a reality. If you love cats but are allergic, help us with data entry. If you can’t adopt but love cats, assist with fundraising to build our facility. Have lots of time? Help us transport cats from rescue locals to clinics. Love cats and have space? Become a Foster.!
