We recently connected with Lyric TheArtist and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lyric, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
The way I overcome &/or beat creativity blocks is by letting whatever is blocking my creativity to play itself out & not forcing anything. I don’t focus on anything creative, I don’t try to “make” myself be creative. I just ride the wave & put my time into other things until I feel my creativity start to flow again.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Lyric TheArtist & I’m an artist, tattoo artist, painter/air brush artist, sneaker customizer, rapper & audio engineer. I’ve been an artist my whole life & at 13 years old I had decided that I wanted to become a tattoo artist & in 2009 my journey began. Since 2009 I’ve been a tattoo artist putting my own twist to whatever my clients present me with but mainly specializing in mandala & geometric designs, color/black & grey anime designs, floral tattoos & custom lettering. I also welcome any skin tone but I mainly focus on making color tattoos on melanated skin tones. As a painter/air brush artist I like to paint & make art that can show how I was feeling in the moment. I always try to mix painting by hand & air brushing in a lot of pieces I do because I feel like it adds more “dynamic” to the overall piece. The same with customizing sneakers & anything else I customize. Except when I customize a sneaker/helmet/jacket etc, I’m MORE focused on the quality & longevity of the piece. My custom anything is 1,000% wearable! I’ve been an artist making music since about 2011. Around 2008 is when I recorded my first real song with my older brother & then I start recording myself with just a mic & a laptop & it grew from there. Since then I was apart of a rap group, released a multitude of projects & singles & collaborations & have recorded, mixed/mastered full projects for myself & others. Currently I have an album “The Red Nose Pit” currently streaming on every major platform. As far as performing I’ve been known to show face at ‘The Take Off ATL” events that happen every Tuesday at The Tree House Lounge. I currently don’t have any shows of my own lined up but you can always stay up on everything I’m doing by visiting lyrictheartist.com! I love & have fun with everything I do & I’ve always felt THAT’S what it’s about! & when you’re enjoying yourself, others will enjoy getting they work by you.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back at my journey the three main things that were the most impactful for me were: 1. Always staying focused on what I want to accomplish & staying true to myself.
2. Always being a fast learner & knowledge seeker
3. Always playing MY position
The advice I have for people that are early in their journey is: ALWAYS stay on your grind, stay in your lane, & don’t worry about what anyone else is doing. Always enjoy what you’re doing & strive for perfection to achieve excellence
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge I am currently facing is finding & maintaining the balance between work/career , hobby’s, & personal life. What I’m doing to resolve my obstacles is really having a schedule for my personal life, sticking to it, & being on time. & Also getting out of the habit of starting things & working on them slowly. & I do these things by as I said having a schedule for “life” have days & times for certain hobby’s & move accordingly depending how I’m feeling creatively (if I’m not feeling creative with music, then work on a painting & vice versa). Taking days off…If theres anything I can say I love it’s tattooing, so most of the time I am at the tattoo shop I don’t feel like I’m “at work’, but I do understand that taking days off is important to the balance.
