Meet Mackenzie Jorns

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mackenzie Jorns. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mackenzie below.

Hi Mackenzie, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Through life experiences, from overcoming intense high school bullying to enduring circumstances beyond my control and battling Lyme Disease, I’ve learned that my ability to handle adversity and uncertainty is incredibly strong. My perspective wasn’t always positive, but now I’m grateful for the resilience I’ve developed, which fuels my drive to grow a company that helps people feel more confident in themselves. My personal mission is “I want women to feel more confident because I was here.”

Business and entrepreneurship for me is a journey where, although I can’t control everything, I can control my thoughts and responses. My life experiences have taught me the importance of developing and maintaining resilience. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do what I do today, no matter the challenges it brings.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m committed to creating a company that supports the increased confidence of everyone. No matter who you are or where life has taken you, I believe you deserve to feel confident in your skin. At Protea, where we provide virtual, brand agnostic skincare for all, we continue to iterate with this mission in mind. I’m incredibly excited for what 2024 has in store for us!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The top three qualities I believe someone needs to cultivate resiliency are: mental efficiency; mental endurance; mental stamina.

Mental Efficiency – The ability to acknowledge your feelings, process in a productive fashion, and not let them stop you from continuing to move forward in life. I’m not sure if this is actually a thing, but it came to me last year and naming this process “Mental Efficiency” has helped me work on mastering it.

Mental Endurance – The ability to sustain yourself when one thing after another knocks you down.

Mental Stamina – The ability to keep moving forward through life situations that cultivate resiliency.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The top three books that have had the biggest impact on my development as a person and professional have been:

Effortless by Greg McKeown – Wonderful book that helps you do more of the things you want in life and spend less time doing the things you don’t want to do.

Outlive by Peter Attia – Brain health is extremely important to me.

Born to Shine by Kendra Scott – The first book I read that I actually felt connected to and “seen.”
