We recently connected with Madeleane Hazen and have shared our conversation below.
Madeleane, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I have such a passion for helping small businesses grow their brand and find success because I’m such a dreamer myself. There is nothing like the feeling of having an idea and taking action to bring it to fruition. However, having my son and becoming a mother really changed my perspective for how I feel towards what I do as my career. It honestly took me about a year to find my purpose and motivation again. My priorities shifted so drastically that I didn’t feel as much importance in what I could offer people digitally when I wanted to present in the real world with my son more than anything. It’s been a journey to find my true purpose as a designer in this new phase of my life, but I’ve met so many “mamapreneurs” that have helped me realize that my purpose is to help other mothers build their brands in a way that allows them to be with their children and provide for them. It’s my passion to make branding feel easy and attainable so they don’t have to waste their time on it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I run a creative studio offering branding, website design, social media management, and more! I started this business from hosting creative workshops to bring women together to learn a skill and get their creative juices flowing. Growing that business came along with needs to brand myself and I fell in love with logo and website design along the way. Years later, I am now focused on serving mom owned businesses to help them achieve their dreams while wearing so many hats. As a self taught designer, I know firsthand how overwhelming the role of business owner can be, so I am passionate about offering my skills to take the weight off for others. This year we have added social media services as an extension of branding to help brands connect with their audience and build a consistent online presence.
With a renewed focus on mamapreneurs, I have launched the Brand Mama podcast to share and connect with other mom owned businesses or simply women who need a little guidance in running their brand. I’m looking forward to sharing more personal insights and reaching women in a similar life stage and career as myself. I am also building a team of moms who share the same desire to work towards a passion and be a very present, dedicated mother at the same time.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resourcefulness, grace (for my clients and for myself), and integrity.
Being self taught, I have had no choice but to be resourceful to hone my skills and keep up with others in my industry. It’s been difficult but also empowering to figure everything out on my own without a rule book to guide me. I’ve also found that my integrity to do what’s right with work scenarios has always benefited me even if it’s the harder choice to make at the time. I’m proud of the grace I give myself as well as extending that same grace to my clients, because kindness can go a long way in establishing relationships which leads to more business in the long term.
I would advise anyone early on in their journey to stay true to themselves and try not to compare yourself to anyone else. Imposter syndrome is real and comparison is truly the thief of joy.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest challenge I’m currently facing in my career is what I feel many other business owners are facing in this current economy. My passion is to help other small businesses who I know are always working hard to make ends meet, so I do my absolute best to offer top notch services at an affordable price point that can help them move the needle and not strap them down. However, doing so means the ceiling for my brand and what I can offer my team is only so high, so it’s always hard to balance that and make sure everything is fair on both ends. Charging prices with integrity is incredibly important to us at Pais + Haze.
