We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madison Lloyd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madison below.
Madison, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
By keeping an open mind and consistently opening myself up to listen to new people, I am able to keep my creativity alive. I enjoy meeting new people and learning about them and their ideas. Through Destination Us, I am able to use my creative brain and make each and every couple’s true wedding dreams a reality. I sit down with my clients and get to know them on a deeper level. I learn who they are, who they were before they met each other, and what brought them together. We discuss what they enjoy doing together and what they bond over and figure out how to incorporate that into their wedding day. Each couple has a different story, so I am always able to think of something new and incorporate a truly unique aspect into their wedding.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a personalized wedding planner for the Carolinas and beyond. I work with couples who want a personalized wedding that truly shows their personality. These couples are wanting to break away from the wedding world of copy and pasting from social media and present a truly unique wedding. I get delighted when couples reach out ready to take on the unique side of planning their perfect day. While I prefer full planning couples, I know not everyone wants that and some like to do a lot on their own. With this in mind, I recently launched a 90 Day Polish package to accommodate couples who are wanting to do the bulk of the planning on their own, but want someone to finalize it in the end and make sure all the puzzle pieces are fitting together. My 90 Day Polish package handles all the communication with vendors, timeline creation, day of set up, coordinating, and more. Total, I have three different wedding packages that couples may choose from; full planning, partial planning, and 90 Day Polish.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities that impacted my journey the most are organizational skills, being open to change, and personal development.
Organizational skills are not only recommended for the majority of career paths, it is pretty much required in order to be a successful planner. No matter what direction you are planning on going in your career life, and even your personal life, you need to work on organizational skills if you are not already there. It is not only going to make your life easier, but it will also highly affect those around you.
Being open to change can be hard. It is hard to sometimes accept that just because it has been done that way in the past, doesn’t mean that it is the best way. Sometimes watching from the sidelines, shows you that there is another way to do a task, and it is your turn to develop and implement it. You will never truly be successful if you just do what everyone else is doing. You do not stand out that way. You have to take the first step in the opposite direction and show out! Make your mark.
Personal development was a bit harder for me to accomplish than all the other qualities, yet the skill that has made me the most successful. I consider myself a “forced extrovert.” If you would speak to anyone who knew me eight years ago, they would not believe you if you told them I have had several speaking engagements in front of hundreds of people, easily spoken on live and recorded news/tv show tapings, and attend networking events with ease. I used to be so introverted. I had to force myself out of my shell and get out and meet people. That is how I grew Destination Us. It wasn’t by sitting on the couch and throwing some money hoping for the best ad placement. It was going out, connecting, and making my mark. My personal development will always be one of the most important qualities and the one that I will always be the most proud of.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is an engaged couple who is ready to break the mold on the copy and paste wedding society we are currently experiencing. They are ready to put their personalities forward and add that into their wedding. My ideal client puts their trust in me and knows that I will plan their entire day and the only thing they really need to worry about is saying yes and no.
