We recently connected with Maggie Espinosa and have shared our conversation below.
Maggie, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
I wasn’t always self-disciplined. In my younger years I didn’t follow through on numerous projects that I now wish I had. This was the catalyst for my self-discipline. I hated letting people down, and more importantly letting myself down. I choose projects and commitments only with the intent of following through. If I don’t think I can take the task to fruition, I do not commit.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
For the past 22 years I have been a travel journalist. Throughout those years I’ve been fortunate to contribute my travel knowledge as a guest on the Travel Channel, NBC Nightly News, CW, ABC San Diego, and in publications such as Travel + Leisure, Huffington Post, USA Today, LA Times, and myriad other media outlets. The industry has changed since I began my career. Writing for newspapers and magazines has segued into writing and curating my own travel blog — TravelWithMaggie.com. It’s required me to hone my photography skills, keep on top of trends in order to stay relevant, and decide which content most interests my demographics.
Pivoting in my travel career has kept it fresh and exciting. I’m always learning and branching out. Now Maggie Espinosa is a brand. Under that brand umbrella are extensions — travel journalist, blog consulting, teaching travel writing classes, an online shop selling items I’ve found on my travels around the world, running an Airbnb, etc.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
This goes back to what I said earlier about being discipline. Follow through is one of the most important qualities. This requires discipline. My assignment editors could count on me to turn in my articles on time and within the parameters they requested.
A skill I find impactful in any career is passion. If you’re passionate about what you do, then you will produce quality work.
Equally as important is to always continue to learn about the trajectory of your industry. If you don’t keep up with the changes, you’ll be left behind.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Curating a blog requires new, fresh content on a regular basis. I am looking for disciplined, creative, travel loving writers who are interested in contributing guest blogs to my website. The demos of the people who engage in my website are women ages 40 – 65. I am also interested in collaborating with brands who feel their service or product would be a good match with my sites demos.
I can be contacted at travelwithmaggie.com, magstravels@aol.com, or (619) 341-4300. Thank you!
