We recently connected with Makeda Porter and have shared our conversation below.

Makeda, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose through continuous mistakes or as I call life lessons. After years of working various jobs, completing several post-secondary degrees, and doing what I thought my purpose was, I still felt empty. It took years of working in corporate America to realize each job was only for financial gain, but I was lacking in so many areas of my life. I wanted more, I wanted to make money while doing what I love. I wanted to help people reach their full potential in many aspects of their life and I felt in every fiber within me I could not achieve this goal with my current job status. To find my purpose it took some deep diving into who I really was and where I wanted to be. I took a leap of faith, went into deep prayer, started my business, invested in myself, and took action to accomplish my goals. My purpose is now leaving my dream of being a business owner, helping people to start their businesses, and helping women with self-care and wellness practices.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
A high school dropout that has made it her lifelong passion to spread the importance of education and forever learning. Makeda has defined her personal experiences to serve as a motivation to make an impact on the lives of everyone she meets. Makeda is an international speaker and life coach always looking for opportunities to share her gifts. Her goal is to spread positivity, uniqueness, and many years of experience and research into every action she partakes in.

Makeda’s academic credentials include a Master’s in Education/Instruction and Curriculum, a Master’s in Education/Instructional Design Technology, and a Doctorate in Education/Leadership and Policy Studies. She has certifications in Life Coaching, Mindfulness, Design Thinking, Neuro-Linguistic Programmer, Motivational Speaker, and Hypnotherapy & Hypnosis.

To ensure her public speaking can reach many individuals she found the well-recognized podcast, The Black Educated Tea Podcast. She operates a nonprofit that mentors and tutors students titled Our Kids Our Future. She provides professional consulting with her business Porter Consulting Group, which focuses on business startups, nonprofit expertise, and professional coaching. Extending her entrepreneurial spirit, Makeda created Oasis Vibe which is centralized on providing the best natural and organic body products.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that have been the most impactful in my life are communication, humility, and confidence. In the early stages of your journey no matter if you are on a healing journey or a business journey remember to stay humble, communicate and keep a high level of confidence. These three attributes have been of great value in my life no matter what stage I am in.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
To be very transparent the one challenge I face and continue to work on is DOUBT. After many accomplishments with business, education, family, and life I still catch myself in a state of DOUBT. A few ways that have been beneficial in helping me to improve this challenge are affirmations, therapy and just doing whatever I put my mind to, even in the midst of DOUBT. I tell myself DOUBT will not consume me, I can do anything I put my mind to and nothing will get in my way, especially if its part of my purpose.
