We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Malasurfcartel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Malasurfcartel, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Staying inspired. Living and experiencing life/situations being comfortable or uncomfortable. Embracing everything and then being able to let it out and paint the perfect picture. Taking it to the next level and seeing how to perfectly express what you feel. That’s all art really is. How we see the world. Only difference is is that we have to be able to say what ordinary people are afraid to say or even touch or or speak about. All the personal stuff. We can’t be afraid to speak the truth and maybe the audience feel it. It’s all about emotion at this point. That’s what keeps me going. Being able to express how I feel with no filter. I find it interesting to see the outcome of what a life situation put mes through and I’m able to let it all out on a canvas and see it it in real life. Everything that comes out of my head in audio form.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am music producer. Specifically make alternative rock and electronica. All raw and uncut. I do my best to not do much editing and use the cheapest of gear. Use what I can and have around. I’m not big into using the best of the best. You can make honest art out of anything. Any piece of gear has a personality. Right now my current studio is out up due to remodeling of my home. I’m doing a lot of remixes and electronic records since all I have is my laptop at the moment. Focusing on making the best sounds I can out of that, which sort of pushes me and motivates me to make some crazy sound bending stuff. I’m sure it’ll improve my ear once I actually have my guitars and synths all set up and decide to make an alternative project.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For sure putting yourself out there. Networking. Meeting others that do what you do and collating. For sure being out in the scene and shaking hands with people. Also, reading books on your craft and studying up the people that inspire you in your like of work. That can always motivate you to start molding your persona or identity. And last would having patience and staying consistent. Even when it’s not looking like it’s going anywhere, it actually really is. It’s just hard to notice when you’re constantly working on the new stuff. Stay focused.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I think the one thing that is a challenge is just having more time to do more things in a day. There is honestly not enough time to keep up with life in a day. But for sure do the most that you can. The struggle is just having to make time for others while you’re honing in and working on your art. It can get difficult to keep up with family or even pursue personal relationships. It’s just difficult when you’re passionate and want to be the best you can be with your craft.
