We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mallory Madeya . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mallory below.
Mallory , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
By knowing exactly who I am as a person and what I have to offer . I’ve accomplished so much and in doing so that also gives me confidence . I love stepping out of the box and being different . I take chances and always try to be better than who I was yesterday. I also think when you look good you feel good . The only person I’m in competition is myself .
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve been a hairdresser for about 16 years . I’ve always had a passion for the beauty industry and wanting to make everyone feel confident in themselves. I am a mom to the most amazing 4 year old little girl & a dog mom to the best pittie dog around! My main focus now professionally is hair color. Taking a passion for lived in colors and mainly blondes I absolutely love the creativity I get in certain looks. Trends are ever changing so I make sure I keep up on those and challenge myself daily! I love bringing new techniques into the salon as well. Even after all these years I still continue to be open to learning new things. It’s exciting!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
-Listening skills. Communication is the number one skill you need to be a hairdresser. Listen to your clients , listen to your peers , listen to yourself . Making sure and understanding you and your client are on the same page. Listening to their concerns on what they like and what they don’t like. Have an open mind and listen to fellow co workers that might have more knowledge in a certain technique . – Confidence. Lacking confidence can make your clients nervous and it might also show in your quality of work. If you are un sure about something , ask! Being confident in your skill can take you far . Don’t be too confident though that it makes you seem unapproachable or unteachable. Clients feel comfortable and trust stylists who are not only confident but show them they know what they’re doing.
– empathy . We aren’t just hairdressers we are also therapists in a way. Clients not only come to us to get a great haircut or hair color but they also come to us to express their life. Being able to either relate , give advice or just be a listening ear will make clients continue to come back knowing they can trust you and enjoy your company while getting a great service . It’s all about customer service and connecting with your clients.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My bosses . Danielle & Maryann . I worked with them at my first ever salon . They both took me under their wing and taught me almost everything I know . Not only skill wise but gave me the advice and push I needed and continue to need throughout my career. I’ve worked with them on and off the last 16 years. Not only are they my bosses but they are some of my best friends and we have developed such a special bond. They constantly challenge you and give you the necessary skills and advice to be successfully in this industry .
