We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marc Vincent a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marc, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Self confidence is a funny thing. One day you go from not seeing your worth, to understanding how you’ve been under valuing yourself. I’ve always struggled with feeling less than or not good enough. And even knowing I had talents, I still struggled with comparing my talents to the people around me doing the same things. I am a self taught photographer and Where now I can see the value in my progress and talent, I at one point thought that being self taught made me less than. But I love to create so I never let that stop me. I started taking photos in 2014 and had my first exhibition a year later. That boosted my confidence some, but it was still a long road to really feeling like I was the master of my craft. After that exhibition, I started to be sought out, which was very intimidating. I use to say ” If the gig of your dreams came along, would you be prepared to except it?”, and at that time I could confidently say no. Come 2018 I did the unbelievable, left my job at the time and started doing photography full time. This would be the road to a higher understanding of valuing my efforts. I was solely doing photography and had to figure out how to be an artist and business man. these next few years would teach me how to respect myself, time and craft. by 2020, I had a billboard in Time Square, My first Celebrity client and I was published in multiple magazines. I no longer thought my talent was a fluke. By this time I came to know I was gifted in a way that most aren’t, and that I had the ability to manifest my thoughts into actually works of art. Once I grasp that concept, I was able to pull myself out of self doubt. Now In 2024 I’m an unstoppable force.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an artist that dabbles in multiple mediums. My speciality is Photography and Creative directing. I have the ability to bring ideas to life in a way that only I can. I am currently manifesting two projects that will elevate my brand and the cultures I am apart of. I’ve always had a wild imagination since I was a kid. When I was a child I would draw and make clay figures to express myself. As an adult I take photos, and pull together large productions to express myself. I am Cis queer black man, and a lot of my art is through the eyes of this truth.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities would be Patience, Practice & Repetition. There is a certain amount of grace you have to give yourself when venturing off into the unknown. We are taught to stick with what feels safe. There are an extraordinary few that supersede this idea and go on to do amazing things through belief in their own abilities. Its important to show up for yourself and give yourself grace and make sure you live your best life and take the necessary chances on yourself.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Currently I facing the challenge of learning new things. I’m in this new space in my venture where I have to Pitch ideas versus having people seek me out for my intellectual property. But I’ve adopted the idea of doing things scared. the worst that can happen is that someone doesn’t like it and in that case I can use the process as a learning lesson and make it better for the next time.
