We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcelle Abel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcelle below.
Marcelle, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
As a daughter of a Marine who later in life became a Marine myself, physical fitness was something my family valued growing up. I was a runner in high school which later in life turned into many, many races from 5k’s to half marathons to marathons and more relay races than I can count. I knew the benefits that exercise provided physically but it wasn’t until years later where I really started to get interested in the mental and medical benefits as well.
It was just after my Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011 that I dove into all the research that I could about health and fitness and its connection to neurological disorders. Having a good understanding that exercise was important to stay generally healthy, I wanted to know what I could do to keep myself from the same fate. I wanted to know to connection between nutrition and fitness and how we have the power to choose how we age. I had just given birth to my twins two years prior so the need to keep myself as healthy as possible became more important than ever.
As the years went on, I started focusing my career on health and fitness working for one of the largest fitness companies as a Sales Rep then to continue on to get certified as a Health Coach in 2020 followed by my certification as a Brain Health Coach in 2023 and now taking it even further and in the process of getting certified as a Nutrition Coach.
From weight loss, to brain health, to habit change, to having a healthy relationship with food, my goal is to work with women in mid life to help them live their healthiest lives from the inside out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a Wellness and Nutrition Coach, I see so many women my age struggling with not only staying fit but with the mental transition that midlife throws at us. We have so many hormone changes and it not only messes with our physical self but with our mental and emotional. Its in the phase of life where we are losing parents, watching kids grow up too fast and in the midst of that, we can lose ourselves and forget to make our health a priority.
I want to show women in their 40’s and 50’s that its not selfish to make your health a priority. I want them to know we can still be strong, lean, sexy, mentally focused and we are allowed to feel as vibrant as we want. Where many of us spend so much time caring for others, its important to not forget who we are and what we are capable of in order to live our healthiest life.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Hands down mindset is number one. Its not easy owing your own business even if your heart and vision are as big as mine so I have had to wrestle with imposture syndrome and learn how to ride the mental rollercoaster quite a bit. Its easy to get lost in the noise and feel like you have nothing to offer but that’s when having a resilient mindset and a belief in myself has been important.
The second quality I think has been key in my journey is my true desire to help people. I am more people focused than sales focused which can be tricky when you are trying to build a business but the thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is thinking of the transformation my clients are experiencing. When one of them comes to me and says “I feel amazing” or “I can’t believe I did that” I just want to jump for joy! It truly makes me to happy to see someone come alive and see their own potential. Being people focused always wins.
A love for learning is also a very important quality to have in every aspect of building a business. Having a growth mindset will forever serve you and your clients. We cannot get stuck in one way of thinking so Im constantly reading, getting more certifications and soaking up all the knowledge I can to better serve both myself and my clients.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I constantly feel overwhelmed but over the years I have done a ton of work on this because if we allow overwhelm to control us, it not only makes things messy business wise but it can cause us to be chronically stressed and that is so unhealthy for our body and our brain.
The first thing I decide when overwhelm hits me is to not allow it. Sounds simple but not always easy. I make the choice to not allow overwhelm to control me but taking a deep breathe and getting logical. What are the things that need my attention asap and what can I put off to make space for myself. I’m a huge list writer and it helps to get it all out of my head and on paper so I can visually sort things out in the right order.
Then I do that thing. Just one thing that will ease the overwhelm and once that is done, I move to the next. One thing at a time allows me to focus and breathe and choose peace of mind.
