Meet Maria Alejandra Hernandez

We were lucky to catch up with Maria Alejandra Hernandez recently and have shared our conversation below.

Maria Alejandra, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

At home, definitely. My parents are both hard workers and passionate lawyers. They never let life get them down, and they just kept pushing harder and brighter with every challenge that came their way. It was a blessing to watch them grow, learn, and build everything from scratch. They face every challenge with perseverance and positivity, always striving to improve and achieve their goals.

I lived in a home built on hope, caring, and groundedness. My parents always made time for their family and friends despite their busy schedules. They were caring and compassionate people who went out of their way to help anyone they could.

It was truly inspiring to witness their growth and progress over the years. I couldn’t be more proud of them and everything they’ve accomplished.

My parents still wake up at the crack of dawn to make their famous coffee, “el amanecido,” and check in on my sister and me. I am grateful to have such supportive parents who will always be there for me; they are still on my train’s last wagon.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m the type of person who builds and creates things. That distinctive style, integrating my design, engineering, and artistic knowledge, has made me one of the most recognized paper artists and designers in the events industry.

Through these years, I accomplished being an author and speaker in stationery and design events at an international level, featured in magazines and TV shows.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I believe, keeping your curiosity on, at all times is a valuable tool that can lead to inspiration and knowledge in unexpected ways. Even though you may consider yourself an expert, it’s essential to maintain a “beginner mentality” to continue learning and growing. Embracing new experiences and challenges can help you become wiser, faster, and more skilled in your field.

It’s also crucial to approach problems with a problem-solving mindset, focusing on the process and system behind finding solutions. By building the habit of problem-solving daily, you can become more confident in handling any situation or crisis that comes your way. So, keep an open mind, stay curious, and never stop learning!

Creativity has been overshadowed by prejudices for a long time and sectored only to the arts. Getting out of the box, in a world where the only constant is change, is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Creative thinking leads us to flow in the search for alternatives, possibilities, and infinite combinations. How long do we allow our minds to be in a state conducive to generating ideas? Being creative can be reflected in a work of art, a piece of music, an invention, and also in an innovative solution in our business.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Walking with my dog, Maverick is the best remedy for instant relief when I feel overwhelmed. That mix of fresh air, great company, the act of being present, here and now for him, enjoying just this moment, is healing and allows me to drain my feelings and thoughts.

Taking a break from work, going outside, and taking deep breaths can be highly beneficial. It can help clear your mind and recharge your energy, giving you a renewed sense of focus and enthusiasm when you return to your tasks.
