We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maria Laura Rainer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maria Laura, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Impostor Syndrome is a psychological pattern where individuals doubt their accomplishments and fear being exposed as a “fraud,” despite having evidence of their competence. Those experiencing this syndrome believe their success is due to luck, or that they’ve deceived others into thinking they’re more intelligent or capable than they actually are. This condition can affect anyone, regardless of their job success or position in life.
Impostor syndrome can affect anyone, regardless of their level of education or preparation, because life inherently presents situations beyond our control. Despite extensive study and preparation, unexpected challenges and experiences can trigger feelings of inadequacy. This highlights the universality of the syndrome, emphasizing that it’s not a reflection of one’s actual competence or achievements but rather a common psychological response to navigating the unpredictable nature of life’s journey and I was not the exception to the rule.
In my journey as a real estate agent, facing impostor syndrome can appear as an unexpected chapter. Discovering that many of my respected peers shared similar feelings was both a comfort and a wake-up call. I took proactive steps, reflecting on my successes and seeking honest feedback, which painted a far more positive picture than my inner critic had led me to believe. I have pursued training in PNL, mind control and coaching trainings with authors like Jim Rhon, Vincent Peal to retrain the mind and my focus. This experience taught me the importance of self-compassion and the value of embracing my professional growth with a balanced perspective, making me not only a better agent but a more self-assured individual. Always remember to work on your own self development and stay true to yourself.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on the journey, the three qualities that stand out as the most impactful are discipline, persistence, and an ongoing commitment to learning. These traits not only pave the way for personal and professional growth but also equip one to navigate the complexities and challenges that come with any ambitious path.
Discipline: This is the foundation of success in any field. It’s about setting goals, making plans, and following through with consistency. Discipline involves prioritizing your time and energy towards your objectives, often requiring sacrifices along the way. To cultivate discipline, start by setting small, achievable goals and gradually build your capacity to take on larger challenges. Establish routines that align with your goals and stick to them, even when motivation wanes. Tools like time management apps, journals, or mentors can provide structure and accountability.
Persistence: The road to achievement is rarely smooth or straight. Persistence is the quality that keeps you moving forward, even in the face of setbacks or failures. It’s about resilience and the refusal to give up on your dreams, no matter how distant they may seem at times. To develop persistence, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Learn from failures instead of fearing them, understanding that each setback is a step towards your ultimate goal. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who encourage your perseverance and remind you of your strengths and progress.
Always Keep on Learning: The landscape of any profession or field of interest is constantly evolving, and staying informed is key to staying relevant. An insatiable appetite for learning ensures you’re always growing, adapting, and innovating. To foster this, cultivate curiosity and seek out new knowledge and skills related to your field, as well as those outside of it to broaden your perspective. Engage in continuous education through courses, workshops, reading, and networking. Remaining open to feedback and new experiences is crucial, as they offer invaluable lessons and insights.
Advice for Those Early in Their Journey:
