Meet Marilena Chatzinikoli

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marilena Chatzinikoli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Marilena , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
As a creative individual i often face difficulties to be as creative as i feel in everyday life. We need to keep the creativity flowing all the time and because of this i created rituals that help me be in touch with my creativity and myself.
I take time to process my thoughts and my next moves. I watch films to find inspiration and most importantly i surround myself with other creative people that we help each other by sharing our tips, next plans or struggles.
I practice meditation but in a creative way. Doing little crafts, for example, now I’m in the process of making 3 Victorian style skirt cages for an upcoming fashion film.
In everyday life i try to notice the little things around me and I try to have a positive attitude that helps me keep the creativity alive.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As a film Director I am deeply passionate about filmmaking and storytelling..
What excites me most about my role is the opportunity to express what fascinates me.
The subjects vary as im a curious individual.
From the beginning of the year I directed and designed props for music videos of an amazing Artist “MoulD” that his vision is very interesting to bring to life.
What excites me more is combining all my interests and skills for writing, directing and designing props or sets.
From the beginning of the year i worked on amazing projects for a fashion film festival, music videos and a lot of plans for the future that i am very excited to share.
Right now i am working on my second short film after the first one that i directed and will be ready very soon.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The creative industry can be incredibly challenging, and there were moments when things will not go as you planned or as you wished. This is the moment that you build your creative character. To be able to face your self doubts before anyone else i find that is the most difficult part.
There are some practices that help me rise up from my “low creative” state.
Giving ans seeking objective feedback to yourself is a good way to understand where you stand.
Embracing discomorft. Most of the times you dont grow when you are stable. Stepping out of your comfort zone takes a lot of courage but in the future you will be thankful for the experience you gave to yourself.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was their unwavering support and belief in me. Having supportive parents who appreciate and celebrate my unique qualities has made all the difference in my journey. They provided me with the tools and encouragement to believe in myself, even when faced with doubts or challenges. Their belief in my potential gave me the courage to pursue my passions and pursue my dreams.
Having parents who not only love you unconditionally but also believe in your abilities can be transformative. It fosters a sense of confidence and resilience that allows you to navigate life’s ups and downs with courage and determination. I am forever grateful for the supportive upbringing I received, as it laid the foundation for the person I am today.
