We were lucky to catch up with Marina Lang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marina , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
If there was one word to describe my journey, it’s probably resilience. Having started my career and adult life at a young age often subjected me to difficult situations. Sometimes the only assets I possessed were patience and strength. I think once I developed an understanding that I had a lot of dreams I also quickly came to the realization that achieving my goals would come with a lot of challenges. However resilience is not something that comes over night. I’ve often been put in to really difficult situations career wise where I had no choice but to live through the rough moments. I also noticed that difficult times may seem eternal at that moment but really if you find a way to get through them they do pass. Each situation and experience builds you up for further roadblocks or challenges that come. I’m just lucky I started my career young and I had some really strong people behind me who made me resilient to a lot of situations. I also think my spiritual life often helped me maintain a sense of distance from situations which were out of control.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the co- owner of a restaurant in Downtown LA ‘No Worries Curry’ which was based on a cooking show my mother and I had on Amazon Prime. I also have a small production company ‘MMM Productions & Talent’ and create content currently as a model, fashion influencer and lifestyle.
I love all 3 things that I do. They’re so different yet creative in their own respective ways. Having opened a restaurant was one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my career but also one of the happiest. I get to be around food and see people smile at the dishes they try with us.
I play multiple roles when it comes to running the business starting from running our accounts, suppliers, marketing to actually attending customers. It’s such a fulfilling experience.
I also run a small production company which produces ads, infomercials, short films, music videos and occasionally helps in artist management.
Followed by these two I recently decided to step back in to the world of modeling/ content creation. I was a model for 10 years of my life and realized I really missed fashion. So I’ve been working with an influencer agency and creating a lot of exciting fashion content. It’s been a great experience so far as I shoot content from home and have had quite a few partnerships with interesting products and brands.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
– Resilience – Patience
– Persistence
I emphasize the first point for the second time as that’s a HUGE factor in having a impactful journey,
I think as somebody just starting out with a certain perception of what their journeys would look like they go in to shock mode when hurdles come their way. However having an understanding that there will be some more challenging moments than others but still continuing is a very important understanding to have.
Patience is a virtue they say and it really is. If I could’ve told my younger self that with time and effort, things would work out in ways I didn’t anticipate, I really would’ve.
Lastly, amongst this list having a persistent heart and mind is the biggest asset anybody can have. People often give up on their ambitions or dreams because they feel they tried a few times and didn’t achieve what they wanted. I’ve personally found both in my life and in others, if you want something bad enough and keep trying no matter how many rejections it takes, that at some point that no will turn in to a yes. Having the personality to wake up and try again tomorrow even though today didn’t go quite like you wanted is one of the biggest qualities a person can have.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’d love to meet more like minded individuals to collaborate and create with whether it’s in the restaurant space, fashion space or any other sort of creative undertaking.
I think in terms of restaurant, I’d love to meet more people to potentially partner up with to possibly open more locations.
In the fashion space I’d love to team up with designers and brands to create amazing content with.
I also enjoy meeting other artists to collaborate with them or help them create content. I just want to live and create.
