We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Markus Evans a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Markus, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
That’s a great question. I would say seeing that there are not a lot of people that look like me that are in that independent filmmaking space. It pushes me to work that much harder because I know the opportunities are few and far between. We are looked at under a microscope, a little mishap is blown out of proportion. Everything we do can get overly criticized. We’re put on our toes all the time. It’s not fair but it’s true.
So, for me I have to maintain a high work ethic because of that burden. I also make sure that people around me match that energy. Some people don’t have great work ethic unless there’s some financial gain behind it. However, that shouldn’t be the case if you want to be the best in your craft. Bring your best effort all the time. You never know who’s watching and what opportunities can come from that. Don’t give them any excuses to undercut your work, because they’re looking to do it. Just have that drive and great work ethic, so when doors start to open you can’t be denied. No matter how you look.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a filmmaker. I love creating movies and writing scripts. It’s one of the best feelings in the world when you see your completed film, because you know the work you put in and the time it took to do it.
It takes a village to make a movie. So, finding the people to help you along the way is just as exciting. It’s not always the best because people tend to not have that work ethic I mentioned earlier. But when they do you guys can create magic. Those people helping
you bring a vision you had in your head to screen is mind blowing and fulfilling.
I’m lucky enough to been doing this serious for six years. I found my people who are in it for the long haul and we plan on creating for a long time. We’re actually in the process of writing a feature. Which I can’t wait to tell you guys more about soon!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say one of the qualities that helped me with this film journey is being able to listen. Take others who have came before you and pay attention to what they been through good or bad so you can adjust accordingly. It dosen’t hurt especially if you’re new to it all, don’t move like you got it figured out. These are people who created before you and will after you. Be all ears.
Another quality I would say is practice. When it’s your set and you have to run the show all eyes are on you. Strangers who you never worked with are looking at you and how you run a set. They’re going to judge you regardless. Act like you been there before. So, practice shooting with friends or colleagues get use to running a set. So, when the moments come its not too big.
Lastly, the most important one to me and that’s communication. Being able to talk to people you are working with and telling them how you feel. What’s working and what’s not. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind and tell people what you want. A lot of people are not great at it and is usually the downfall to relationships. Make sure it’s open and consistent dialogue between everyone. A no call or late text can seem minor in the moment, but it has major implications when it comes to shooting a movie. Make sure everyone is on the same page with that!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m looking to collaborate with hardworking individuals. People who put their craft first and don’t look at it as a hobby. Outspoken creative minds who are not afraid to speak their mind and take risks. That’s someone I’m looking for!
