Meet Marquita Gipson

We were lucky to catch up with Marquita Gipson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Marquita, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic came from my mom. In so many ways, she showed me what it means to work hard. From admiring my mother’s work ethic, I developed the skill to give everything I do my all or give nothing. This is how I operate in everything that I do. A person’s work ethic says a lot about who they are and their character.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Girls that Glitter Inc is a nonprofit organization for young girls. Our mission is to empower and teach girls to thrive shine and have self-love. We are known for our 5-Pillars. Our 5 -Pillars are based on how mentoring relationships will empower, build self-confidence, develop leadership and relationship building, community involvement and mentoring.

What is most exciting is that we have created and fostered relationships with teens in several states. We have taken advantage of technology and created a safe virtual space for our mentors. Our organization is committed to serving young girls and being a resource of strength and life for them.

We have some pretty exciting enhancements to our programming that we will be sharing more details soon. The Glitter is about to shine a little brighter on another level!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Girls that Glitter Inc. began in the Spring of 2018. There are days I am really pumped to move things forward and days I am really hard on myself, not thinking we are doing enough. Outside of GTG, I am a Wife, Mother and have a demanding full-time career. I also serve in other organizations and active in ministry at Church. Three qualities that has helped push the vision and mission is being consistency, passionate and of course confident. Consistency is very important to this work and to the girls and families that we serve. The passion and confidence have been displayed in the work and relationships with our girls.

As a mentor, we promote mentorships for all areas of life. We are very transparent with our mentees about life’s experiences, decision makings and how to ask for help when needed. With that being said, that would be the best advice as a CEO I could give the next person. It is okay to ask for help. It is okay to seek mentorship. There is not one successful person who got to the level of success without the help of someone else. GTG is committed to give young girls, what someone gave to us. Another piece of advice I would give someone who has the heart to serve others, is to not be threatened by larger organizations. They too, had to start somewhere. Research your way to success, ask for help and stay consistent!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We are always looking for collaboration and or partnerships. Our Mentees enjoy most hearing and learning from those who have overcome obstacles or have the resources to areas they want to one day accomplish. For example, college readiness, etiquette, entrepreneurship, managing mental health needs, financial literacy and much more. Our mentees are also committed to community service and serving others. We would be interested in collaborating with community service events and opportunities. If you are reading and would like to partner with us please contact us at GirlsthatGlitterInc@gmail.com.

Where do you get your work ethic from?

We’ve all heard the phrase “work hard, play hard,” but where does our work ethic
