We were lucky to catch up with MarshayNicole Wayans recently and have shared our conversation below.
MarshayNicole, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Self care is essential for my productivity. It allows me to reset. Self care is as, if not more, important as life’s day to day duties. I have a monthly spa appointment, I make sure to maintain a proper diet. Plenty of rest. Yoga. And lots of laughs. I married a comedian and I’m a dog mom of 2, laughter is our medicine.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
After 15 years of professional hair styling, I’ve dedicated the last 5 years of my career to catering to more than JUST hair care in women. There was a need for overall wellness in my community and the women who looked like me. I partnered with a chemist and developed a hair care line that was formulated to restore scalp and hair health. I have also recently started a non-profit organization that seeks to positively change the relationship of black women as it pertains to wellness and self care.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My Experience, Environment and Empathy is what has been most impactful in this journey. There is always something you can provide in your community to be of service. You’d be surprised at how resourceful you can be to someone and vice versa when you out yourself in the right spaces. Find the need. Fill the gaps.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I love this question. I’m definitely a book girl. One book that comes off the shelf EVERY year for me is, The Magic by Rhonda Byrne. It changed my life, as it continues to every time I read it. I take this quote with me everyday, “ If you take any activity, any art, any discipline, any skill – take it and push it as far as it will go, push it beyond where it has ever been before, push it to the wildest edges of edges, then you force it into the realm of magic.”
