We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maurice Christian. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maurice below.
Maurice, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Resilience was acquired from my mother who taught and also demonstrated it as she had to overcome many challenges in her own life. Also work ethics taught and demonstrated by my father. So, resilience and work ethics for me goes hand in hand in anything I did/do in life no matter what the goal to be achieved. I first identify the goal, envision myself doing it and devise a plan to get there. Secondly, I strive to be consistent in my efforts daily and be diligent in my quest in spite of the setbacks, mistakes made, failures and fighting through fatigue at times. When I felt discouraged, I would consult with my mom, and she would remind me of what I had been taught and that is to endure the storms I’d face and keep my eyes on the prize. And above all else have faith; for with faith everything is possible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
What I do is to provide professional, original recordings and live entertainment for those who loves what I have to offer as an artist and performer for all event occasions and concerts. I’m most excited about the love and enthusiasm from others I get from my performances when I’m seen and heard. And especially when it’s my own original song creations. I draw my inspiration from other well-known recording artists and strive to match their level of performances while demonstrating my own uniqueness in my own presentation. My style is a mix of new and old school romantic smooth R&B with a hint of jazz. One of my favorite artists is “Smokey Robinson” which I would imitate and still do in my performances at times just for fun. I’m often told it’s the smooth sultry sound of my voice that reaches out and make people sit up and take notice as well as the songs I write as well as songs I may cover.
Starting out as a dancer in the “Puppets from Chicago that was discovered by Wolfman Jack and manager Don Kelley, we toured the U.S, Canada, Japan and later signed to “MCA” record label which laned us on television and a guest star appearance on “Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and more. Because of these experiences I can be a dynamic performer at will as well.
Also, in the past I sang with music groups as lead singer such as the “Platters” headed by Elmer Armstrong and currently supporting member with the Delfonics headed by Gary Stevens both groups out of L.A. Also impersonated “Michael Jackson” and James Brown. In August of 2023 my dance group the Puppets were inducted into “The Chicago Hip Hop Heritage Museum” as the pioneers of hip hop dance out of Chicago.
Currently I’m preparing for my CD release party for summer, my new CD is entitled (Be In My Life); Self written and produced. It can be found on my website “myintimatevoice.com”.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My three most important qualities that I possess are: social skills that allows me to get along with others. The ability to adapt to most environments around me. Artistically creative and have a fun sense of humor. Dancing, Vocal, and pencil art. Teach vocal coloring and deliverance of songs. My most important Kowledge is the Knowledge of God and Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My choir director was very instrumental in developing my vocal skills you hear today by helping me develop a better ear for music harmonies and song interpretation for better delivery of songs and encouraging me to write more as well. Heading up my own local entertainment groups/bands taught me organizing and leadership. And learning from many other professional musicians I’ve worked with in my career how to hear music.
