We recently connected with Maya Ixta Delgado and have shared our conversation below.
Maya Ixta, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
I avoid burnout by realizing that being perfect is impossible. There was a time in my life when I tried to be perfect at everything I did and messing up wasn’t an option. Now I feel more relaxed and motivated because I know it’s okay to make a mistake. Mistakes doesn’t reflect who you are, but how you decide to keep going does.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Of course! I was born in Chicago and when I was about 5 years old, my family and I moved to Dallas, Texas. I moved again to LA in 2020. My mom is Mexican and my dad is Cuban so I grew up speaking Spanish and listening to Spanish pop, salsa, boleros, and other forms of Latin music. I started singing and acting when I was 8 years old, and since then the arts have become an essential part of who I am. I’m a songwriter, singer, actress, and dancer, and have written short films such as “The Hive” which is now on YouTube under Eyescape Productions. Most recently, I released a new song titled “Count One It’s Me”, and it’s out on all streaming platforms! HeARTs of Maya is a non-profit I started in 2016 to give educational scholarships to youth who want to pursue the arts. To date, HeARTs of Maya has given over 50 scholarships to aspiring artists.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being able to take direction is such an important skill. When auditioning, your’e going to get notes from directors, casting directors, and coaches. It’s really important that you know how to apply those notes because it makes you a more diverse and flexible actor. Second, I would say be open to trying new things. It’s important to get outside of your comfort zone when it comes to performing and acting because that’s going help you grow as an artist. When I have tried something new, I usually gain new tools to apply to other projects I’m working on. Lastly, make sure your’e always giving yourself time to grow as a human being. Knowing who you are is going to make all of the characters you play stand out and people can tell when your’e being your most authentic self. It’s only going to make your performances better.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I write in my journal. It doesn’t have to be “formal” writing. Stream-of-consciousness writing helps me get my feelings out and I can see what I’m feeling rather than internalizing it. I would suggest to anyone who is at a difficult point in their life to sit down with a pen and a journal and write. You might be able to resolve a problem in the process! Writing a little every day can clear your mind and allow you to be more productive:)
