Meet Megan Berger

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Berger. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Megan, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I draw strength from my own journey of survival and resilience. Despite having experienced labor trafficking, and childhood abuse, and neglect before entering in the foster care system, I managed overcome these challenges and pursue a college education. I had the determination to rise above adversity. I received unwavering support from the village of people who stood by my side. Whether they were mentors, friends, or family members, or my partner, they refused to let me believe that my past defined my future. Their faith in my abilities and their encouragement have constantly reminded me of the strength and resilience within myself.

My work as a first responder and crisis worker allows me to witness firsthand the impact of intervention and support. I have seen survivors of human trafficking and abuse rise above their traumatic experiences and rebuild their lives. Witnessing their resilience and the positive change that is possible has given me hope and a deire to continue my journey. It reminds me that with the right support, resources, and advocacy, we can create a world where survivors can not only heal but thrive. By training law enforcement on human trafficking, I have the opportunity to contribute to systemic change. I can educate and empower others to recognize the signs, respond effectively, and ultimately prevent the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. This work allows me to be part of a larger movement that seeks justice, healing, and a brighter future for survivors.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
One of the most exciting projects I am currently working on is an anthology that will be published within the next year. Alongside four other incredible women, we are sharing our personal stories of adversity, survival, and overcoming human trafficking. This anthology aims to shed light on the experiences of survivors, providing a platform for their voices to be heard and raising awareness about the issue. It is a testament to the power of resilience and the transformative potential of storytelling. We believe that through our collective narratives, we can inspire and empower others who may be on a similar journey of healing and recovery. It serves as a powerful platform to amplify the voices of survivors and challenge the misconceptions surrounding human trafficking. By sharing our stories, we aim to break down the barriers of stigma and raise awareness about the complexities of this issue.

In addition to the anthology, I am proud to serve on the board of directors for Redemption House of the Bay Area, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing exit resources and post-exit mentorship to survivors of human trafficking. Our organization is committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for survivors, helping them rebuild their lives and providing the resources and support they need to thrive. It is an honor to be part of a team that is making a tangible difference in the lives of survivors. We hope to engage with diverse audiences, including schools, community organizations, and policymakers, to create meaningful dialogue around human trafficking and promote systemic change.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience. The ability to bounce back from adversity and continue moving forward. It is important to cultivate a growth mindset, which involves embracing challenges, learning from setbacks, and focusing on personal growth.

Education and Skill Building. Pursuing education and acquiring skills related to the field you are passionate about can be instrumental in your journey. In my case, obtaining an my EMT license, and working my criminal justice degree equipped gave me the confidence to make a difference.

Self-care and Emotional Well-being. Taking care of your own well-being is vital as you navigate your journey. Prioritize self-care to maintain a healthy balance between your personal and professional life. Self-care is not selfish; it is a necessary investment in your own long-term success.

To those who are early in their journey, my advice would be to believe in your own capacity for growth and development. Embrace challenges as opportunities for learning and personal growth. Seek out feedback and constructive criticism, and use setbacks as stepping stones to refine your path. Surround yourself with a supportive network of individuals who believe in your potential. Seek out mentors, role models, or support groups that can offer guidance, advice, and inspiration.. Recognize that your journey may have ups and downs. Be patient and kind to yourself during difficult times. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and acknowledge your progress along the way. Trust in yourself and the process, and never underestimate the impact you can make by staying committed to your goals.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I try to delve into areas I may not be strongest at, because developing a well-rounded skill set allows me to be flexible and take on challenges, which can be valuable in today’s rapidly changing world. The willingness to try new things is beneficial in collaborating with different teams or adapting to new roles and responsibilities. It also fosters personal growth and development. The more I expand my horizons, the more people I can reach and help.
