Hi Megan, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
As an artist, working excessively on my art over the years I’ve become quite good about overcoming art creativity block. As a graphite pencil, IPad Pro pop culture artist I usually plan ahead of time what I will start creating. There are times where I get an idea and start on another project while working on the current one, I’ll jump over to the other and work on that & vice versa. I would like to add that these last few years I haven’t been consistently creating art like prior, this is due to not having my van which hauled my art to art shows. This gave me an opportunity to branch out to other hobbies which have led to inspire me for future art. I believe a true artist(Or whatever you do) who takes a break from there art from time to time will always go back to their passion. Btw, I just got myself the most recent version of the IPad Pro due to my other one working on its last leg! I’ve recently been feeling the urge of the creative making process again which I look forward to producing more art on this awesome device!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Megan Fant. I’m a local artist out of Phoenix Arizona who works with graphite pencil, and Adobe Sketch/Fresco software through the IPad Pro. I began drawing at a young age, and continue pursuing what I started. Drawing has been a passion of mine and just enjoy doing what I do, creating art! I went to college at Northern Arizona University and obtained a degree in Public Relations, and with a minor in Studio Art. I would consider myself more of a pop culture artist although I have branched out to producing more original artwork over the last few years. The majority of drawings are from movies I grew up watching, along with current films I enjoy. Although I enjoy drawing from movies, I always enjoy the challenge of creating beyond just pop culture. An example; doing art commissions for people on a personal level such as family members in World War II, etc. Also, the dominant themes I represent in my graphite pencil & digital integrated art are the expression of intense emotions in human behavior. I connect with the feeling I am transmitting through my art as I go into the creative making process. The use of black and white in my images has come across to me as dramatic; in some art pieces, I add a subtlety of color to give nuances of balance. The intensity of the dark to light contrast connects the viewer into the story being told in the finished drawing. At times, I will connect images from people which relate to me, from the past to present to tell a story, while still incorporating my high values of intense contrast. As for my iPad Pro digital art I noticed a pattern of creating more abstract pieces that have high contrast & brightness in color. Lately I have been really drawn to creating nature art on my IPad Pro, the creative making process is very therapeutic and stress relieving. When creating nature art this quote comes to mind. “You can do anything you want. This is your world.” -Bob Ross.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the most important quality on my journey as an artist is a passion to create! We all start somewhere with our gifts/talents and with that passion I would also say being persistent and determined to creating and improving your skill. I’m thankful to have an awesome dad who provided me with constructive feedback on each of my drawings over the years. Proportions and hands can be very challenging when starting out with drawing people, I remember going back over and over to get the size of the hand correct and make sure the different part of the body were balanced. Still to this day, I will email my dad a current art piece I’m working on just to get that second pair of eyes.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Growing up my parents gave me a lot of opportunities to find what I enjoy. When I was little my mom literally put me in ballet, tap dancing, gymnastics, soccer, soft ball, basket ball, volley ball, and Tai kwon Do. I enjoyed all of them growing up, but the one that stuck out the most and what I really enjoyed was art. At the age of three, I remember drawing stick looking figures of Barney, which was my favorite children show and also cats. I believe the most impactful thing they did was put me in art classes at an early age and nourishing my talents in that area. They have always been supportive of my art, especially my dad. I’m truly grateful to have had my dad come to almost all my past art shows and help set up as well as making it always fun!
