Meet Megan Jo Wilson

We recently connected with Megan Jo Wilson and have shared our conversation below.

Megan Jo , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Any leader, any entrepreneur, and any Woman has to know resilience. I don’t think it’s a constant for anyone, but a part of ourselves that we have to reconnect with over and over again.

I connect to resilience by remembering that it’s not about me. I remember why I am doing what I am doing and who I am doing it for.

I think of those who have survived – and are still surviving – brutal, violent, and devastating circumstances.

When I remember them, I remember that I haven’t even begun to taste the depths of my resilience. I remember that quitting is not an option. I remember that what I’m doing – even when it feels challenging – is entirely doable.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In 2018 I started an experiment called “Rockstar Camp for Women.”

I spend two months training a very intimate group of Women to command a stage with the energy of their beauty and their voice. Then I put them on stage with a live band and audience to sing one song from beginning to end.

None of them are experienced musicians, but all of them are absolutely mezmorizing.

The approach is completely unique. It’s not thought work.

It’s giving women a somatic experience in actually reveling in being seen and heard in their embodied and fully adorned feminine power. The band is playing. The crowd is cheering. She is in her spotlight at last.

It completely rewires the way she sees and experiences herself, her world, and whatever she thought was “challenging.”

“If I can do that – I can do anything” is a phrase I hear most often. That and, “Everything is different now.”

Right now we are preparing to interview and audition for the next Sisterhood that will gather in Portland, Maine in the fall of 2024.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
There are so many! But if I go on advice, I’d choose… Faith, Fun, and a Willingness to do it imperfectly.

How can you develop faith? It’s my belief that if an idea is pulling at you over and over and over again – especially if you don’t know how to make it happen – it’s coming from something bigger than we are. Or you could even say it’s coming from a bigger part of ourselves that wants to expand, grow, evolve, and heal.

Having faith means trusting that you take the next step and the next step trusting that something beautiful is going to emerge, even if your legs are shaking. Being nervous or even scared is not necessarily a sign to stop or change direction.

Prioritizing fun is also a brilliant strategy, especially when you’re doing something new, edgy and uncomfortable. We so value courage and hard work and discipline in our culture. I like to ask myself, “What would be the most fun way to do this?” “What would be the easiest way to do this?!” It doesn’t have to be hard to be successful!

The only way to learn something and really master it is to start by sucking at it. You must be willing to do it imperfectly and to know that it’s okay. There’s no way to predict what will happen in a workshop, a webinar, or even a post. You can’t get the learning by thinking about it and revising it a dozen times.

Experiment. Trust your instincts. Let it be imperfect. Your imperfect offering could change someone’s life today. That’s the point. There’s a difference between sloppy and imperfect! You do your best knowing that it will continue to evolve as you learn by doing.

How would you describe your ideal client?
The Women who say yes to Rockstar Camp are unique. Very special. They are the Women who know that there is gold to be mined at the edges of her comfort zone.

She’s the kind who says, “That sounds thrilling and terrifying – sign me up!”

Some of the Women are those who used to sing and then stopped, and some of them who have never sung in front of a crowd in their lives.

All of them have a deep intuitive knowing of the power of their voice and that they are holding it back in all kinds of contexts in their leadership. This is not unusual.

I have asked hundreds and hundreds of Women, “When did you first learn to shut down your voice?” and I’ve never met one who didn’t have a story or a memory of how it happened.

Singing is a really effective way of bringing the throat back into balance physically and energetically and the throat is our center of truth-telling, communicating, expressing and honoring our timing. When she sings she is in her body, in her pleasure, and in her vulnerability. There are no strings to pluck or valves to push. It’s her instrument and her one-of-a-kind voice that is being “played”

These Women often say, “I know I’m playing small”. She can see the disconnect between her vision of impact and the life she’s living and she will do anything to close that gap for the sake of her mission and her world.

You can certainly take small steps to expand your capacity for being seen and heard. The Women who say yes to Rockstar Camp are ready to take a huge leap because they know there’s no time to waste.
