Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Nance. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Megan, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Confidence is something that I find I constantly have to work on, like a muscle, to keep pushing forward when I want to just curl up in a ball and disappear. I listen to people like Gary Vaynerchuk and Mel Robbins and it helps keep me going when I think I am failing. I used to read a lot of personal development books and that helped me rewrite my story. Now, I have no problem most days shooting my shot. I find myself in rooms that I feel like I have no business being in, but I just tell myself that I have to be willing to be uncomfortable if I want to be successful. My self-talk and self-esteem is always something I am working on, but most days, I just take a drink, a deep breath, and tell myself that the worst that could happen is it doesn’t work out. But what if it does?
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We are actively pursuing growth of our Root to Rise Plant Co. business and working on several projects for expansion of our services. We have our retail vendor business where we travel to festivals, events, and markets and sell our plants. Then we have our Mobile Plant Bar where we host hands on workshops at different locations and private events. We have also recently launched our Plant Styling Services and are able to come into your home, business, or event and style the space with plants. We then source them and install them in the space. And we are expanding now to add ongoing Plant Care Memberships, where we will continue to take care of the plants for you. And we recently launched our online plant shop, where you can shop plants and have them shipped to you all over the USA. All of this is exciting and we are leaning in to our passions as plant-repreneurs!
We are very passionate about working with and supporting other small businesses. We source lots of our retail products from local makers, including our plant hangers, pots, propagation stations, and more. We love being part of the Georgetown community and are members of the Downtown Georgetown Association, and an amazing female networking group Girl Flock Party. Our dream is to have our own brick and mortar location someday, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for us!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. ADHD – I can’t sit still. I can’t stop working. I can’t take a break. I have NEVER been the type of person to work my 8 hours then go home and sit in front of the TV and that’s it. I always have had some kind of side project or second job that I was working to keep me busy at all times. When I finally decided to start my own business, the hyper focus helped me work and work and work and work. Because I would never ever make it if I believed that being an entrepreneur meant you only work a few hours a day, 5 days a week. I knew that I would go all in, and the only way I would ever stop is if I was in a coma.
2. Boldness – I am not afraid of being told no. I am not afraid of doing something messy and imperfect, then learning from that in how to make it better. I am not afraid to show up to meetings, parties, networking events, happy hours, events, or any opportunity and just be there to learn from those who are smarter than me. I will show up alone. I will show up scared. But I will always show up.
3. Resilience – If I mess up, I try to find a way to learn and make it better. Yes, it kills me to my core. I get sick about it. But I keep going. Even during the super slow times, even when there are mean girls, and even when I don’t feel like it, I just keep moving.
If you are just starting out on your entrepreneur journey, take time to find people who have done what you want to do and seek them out. Learn from them. Study them. Even people who are outside your industry. I talk to small business owners in different industries CONSTANTLY and learn all kinds of amazing things from them. Put yourself out there. You have to show up and tell people about what you are working on. No one can support you if you don’t share your story.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with. I have learned that in this market, you cannot do this alone. You have to have supporters, friends, cheerleaders, neighbors, mentors, and partners to do this life with. Currently, I am looking for event planners and venues to collaborate with, to bring in the plants to the party and help add that extra element to the event. I am looking for businesses who would like to add plants to their space so that we can bring that natural element to their indoor or outdoor space. And I’m always looking for other makers to collab with on special planty items that I can carry in my retail space.
