We recently connected with Megan Phillips and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
As a social media manager, I am ALWAYS thinking of content creation ideas. Whether it’s for my own brand or my clients, my brain is always thinking of ways to share stories in ways that feel authentic to the brand and audience we’re trying to reach. Because of this, I definitely get into creative blocks sometimes.
To combat this, I try to intentionally consume content on Instagram as much as possible, instead of scrolling without a plan. When I’m focused on a specific task for a client, it keeps me limited on the amount of time I spend on it and prevents me from getting ‘lost’ in a scroll hole for hours and hours.
Another thing I do if I’m feeling blocked is take a walk around my neighborhood. Breaking up my focused work time with movement and fresh air can really help get my creative juices flowing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Megan. A mom of 3, founder of Megan Phillips Co, an organic social media management agency, and proud minivan driver.
I help my ‘Just-Don’t-Want-To-Do-It’ CEOs show up consistently online, build more personal connections, and book more clients through social media, without them having to do all—or any—of it themselves.
After being a stay-at-home mom for a few years, I took the leap and started my social media business in January 2021. And it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Now, I get to spend quality time with my family while serving clients by creating authentic content that helps free up their time and energy, so that they can do more of what they love, too.
When we work together, your social media will spark conversations, build personal connections, and bring in new leads—without you needing to do all of the strategizing, planning, and posting on your own.
No more…
⤍ Trying to keep up with the ever-changing algorithm
⤍ Staring at a blank doc trying to come up with ideas for posting about you and your biz
⤍ Guessing about which kinds of posts will help you bring in more leads
⤍ Spending hours in Canva designing graphics
⤍ Going back and forth on whether your content is good enough
⤍ Debating about which hashtags to use (or if you should use them at all)
⤍ Remembering to actually post the content you create
If you’re ready to start showing up consistently on Instagram or Facebook to build more personal connections and book more clients through social media, without having to do all—or any—of it yourself, I have offers that meet you where you’re at.
Full-service social media management is for established business owners who are ready to hand over their social and never think about it again. This includes a custom social media strategy, full implementation from start to finish, multiple platform posting, short-form video, and ongoing monthly support.
Or, if you’re newer to business and just want to pick an expert’s brain, an Instagram audit is for you. Within two weeks of booking, I’ll send over your thorough audit information so you can get busy sprucing up your IG presence and feel good about what to post moving forward.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The ability to adapt to change has been crucial to my business. The social media marketing landscape is changing and evolving every single day. Being able to leverage this and see it as an opportunity, instead of dreading the constant changes has helped me stay relevant and continue to provide quality results for my clients.
Another skill that has allowed me to provide excellent service to my clients is my knack for organization. Since I was a young kid, I’ve always been meticulous and tidy, having a place for all my belongings. Things are no different inside my business. Everything that needs to be done within my business is entered into my project management tool and there is a process in place for each task. I believe that this has allowed me to onboard clients smoothly and impress them, every step of the way.
Being an entrepreneur is not always easy. Some days are amazing, and others are very difficult and make me consider throwing in the towel. Being part of online communities or networking groups with other business owner friends has helped tremendously. They help me take a step back when I’m feeling overwhelmed and are always there- and they just get it. Knowing that I’m not alone on this entrepreneurial journey really does help.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I think that going all-in on your strengths is the smarter move as a business owner.
Now, I realize that in the beginning of a new business, it’s not always possible to just outsource every single thing you don’t enjoy. There are going to be things you’ll have to do that you don’t love- that’s part of the job (and that’s just life). But, once you’re bringing in enough profit to start outsourcing, I wouldn’t hesitate. I would start with the things that you don’t love doing and aren’t good at. In the long run, you will save yourself so much time and stress by partnering with experts to handle those tasks for you instead of fighting tooth and nail to figure it out yourself (and hopefully have it done correctly). This frees up your time to focus on the things that you do enjoy, and that will produce income for your business.
I recently hired a part-time content creator in my business to help create content for clients. This was very hard for me to let go of creating the content for all clients because my business name is literally my name, so it’s my reputation on the line. But, I knew that if I wanted to be able to bring on more clients, I’d need to take some of the workload off of my plate.
I am still creating the strategy for all clients and writing captions, but outsourcing some of the design work has been a game-changer! It has allowed me to do more networking, take one-off projects, and take more sales calls, which will help me grow my business more quickly in the long run.
