Meet Melissa Kreisa

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Kreisa. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Melissa, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I describe my work ethic as dedicated and determined. I got it from my mother. She was an amazing woman – an army nurse in the Korean War when she was just 22 years old.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
‘m Melissa Kreisa, the founder of M.K. Contemporary Art Gallery located in downtown Santa Cruz, CA

As an artist and gallerist, my journey has been fueled by a deep love for the arts and a desire to create a space to showcase the talent of local and regional artists. My vision is to contribute to the cultural tapestry of Santa Cruz, fostering an environment where art becomes a shared experience and a catalyst for meaningful connections.

We are currently hosting a new exhibition,

“Selections: Rydell Visual Arts Fellows 2006-2021”

This exhibition showcases some of the exceptional talents recognized and supported by the Rydell Visual Arts Fund at Community Foundation Santa Cruz County over the past 18 years.

The exhibition will be on view
at MK Contemporary Art concurrently with our neighbors, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH), which are featuring the current Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship recipients.

In 1985, Roy and Frances Rydell established the Roy and Frances Rydell Visual Arts Fund to promote local visual artists and arts organizations. Following their passing, their estate was bequeathed to the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County.

Now in its 15th year, the fellowship program continues to honor the wishes and intent of the Rydells and has awarded $760,000 directly to local artists!

The Rydell Fellowship has played a pivotal role in shaping the artistic landscape of our community. ‘Selections’ pays homage to this legacy by exhibiting a special collection of artworks from previous Rydell award recipients, providing a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to experience the exceptional depth of their creative contributions!

“Selections” is presented with the encouragement and support of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH) and the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County and the Awesome Foundation Santa Cruz. Special thank you to Rose Sellery for lending her time and talents to curate this exhibition!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, three crucial qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that significantly impacted me were resilience, a willingness to embrace change, and a understanding/connection with the art community. My advice for those starting their journey is to cultivate resilience – setbacks are inevitable, but they’re also opportunities to learn and grow. Embrace change; the art scene evolves, and being adaptable is key. Finally, immerse yourself in your local art community, network, and understand the landscape. Building connections and staying engaged will not only enhance your skills but also provide invaluable support throughout your journey.,

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely, I’m always open to exciting collaborations that bring fresh perspectives to M.K. Contemporary Art Gallery. I’m particularly interested in collaborating with arts organizations , local creatives, and those passionate about fostering a dynamic art community.

If you are an artist or arts organization reading this and have an innovative idea for a collaborative project, feel free to connect with me. You can reach out through the gallery’s website or drop me a message on social media. Let’s explore possibilities together and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of contemporary art in Santa cruz
