Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Messiah Butler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Messiah with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I would say I got my work ethic from training for 10+ years for nearly 8 hours a day. Every day since I was in elementary I was training after school at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in all styles for about 4-6 hours. Which also ties into my work ethic for my business and keeping that same mentality when something needs to be done or accomplished. Practice makes perfect. You have to put in the hours and the hard work if you want ideal result’s. I have built an incredibly powerful work ethic over the years which has given me the drive I have today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hi! I’m Messiah Butler also known as THATGRL! Born and raised in Los Angeles California. A dancer, a dreamer, a creative, a mentor, a business owner, and the list goes on. I have been dancing my entire life as I do come from a background of dancers. My mother, grandmother, and aunt were all dancers before I was brought into the picture. For many years dance has been my main priority because I have been so busy touring the world with different artists, long rehearsals and shoot days, as well assisting choreographers when I can, but things got that more difficult when I recently launched my business “TGRL” (THATGRL in REAL LIFE). At the end of last year December 2023 going into the new year I launched my very own digital planners/ life organizers. While being on tour at the time with BIA and Ice Spice I was also continuously in zoom meetings, finding inspo, and planning content shoots for my release. With a sold out first drop it was proven to me that I was capable of many more things than just dance. Being a professional dancer has always been my first love but I recently found a new passion for creating, bringing my visions to life, and building a solid team to assist. I am currently working on a merch drop for my supporters, something that everyone can get their hands on and I’m actually really excited about it so stay tuned ! With all that being said I am just a girl who hopes to inspire & encourage others while also making all my dreams come true <3 .
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three areas of knowledge I would share that were most impactful for me were listen before you speak. It is so important to be able to take in information and really process it before you respond. Second, if you are in a room full of people/ learning environment and the teacher gives notes or corrections always apply it to yourself even if they aren’t talking to you, it will make you better ! Lastly, don’t let what other people think stop you from something you wholeheartedly want to do. Don’t let outside opinions and projections put fear into your plans. Do it too scared, do it unsure, literally just do it. Stop imaging the worst for your life, the moment you become fearless doors WILL open!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am overwhelmed my anxiety tends to kick up a couple of notches which makes things a lot more amplified. What I have just taught myself as of recently is to make a list of all the things that overwhelm me. After I make the list I knock them down at my own pace. I find myself being the most overwhelmed when I try to do everything all at once as if I am not one person. Sometimes you have to just slow things down at a pace that serves your peace.
